DEFINITION OF TERMS

1. ANOMY THEORY- One way of studying a society is to look at its component parts in an effort
to find out how they relate to each other.
2. CRIMINOLOGY- Is the scientific study of crimes, criminal, crime victim and the theories
explaining illegal or deviant behavior.
3. CRISIS MANAGEMENT- Is the expert handling of a crisis or emergency to reduce or eliminate
danger or damage, or the like, especially on the part of the government.
4. CHILDREN- Are our most important asset. All citizens, including the police, should help
protect their rights.
5. COGNITIVE- It is concerned with the way the brain processes and transforms information in
various ways.
6. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM- Is a composite of a number of the man institution of means of
social control.
7. COMPASSION- This motivates people to go out of their way to help the physical, mental, or
emotional pains of another and themselves.
8. DEVIANT BEHAVIOR- Is a behavior which does not adhere to widely accepted social or
cultural norms.
9. DELINQUENT YOUTH- Is one below eighteen (18) years old who has committed a
misdemeanor but whose case has been filed in Court.
10. DISPUTE RESOLUTION- Refers to a number of processes that can be used to resolve a
conflict, dispute or claim.
11. DISCRIMINATION- It is defined as the act of making unjustified distinction between human
beings based on the group, classes or other categories to which they are belong.
12. EMANCIPATION THEORY- Is the application of liberal feminist ideas to traditional
opportunity theory.
13. HEREDITY- This is the most frequent causes with family history revealing mental illnesses.
14. HUMAN BEHAVIOR- Is the voluntary or involuntary attitude a person adopt in order to fit the
society’s idea of right or wrong.
15. JUVENILE JUSTICE- Is the area of criminal law applicable to persons not old enough to be held
responsible for criminal acts.
16. JUVENILE DELINQUENCY- Refers to criminal acts and status offenses performed by juveniles.
17. LAW ENFORCEMENT CONDUCT- Is the required behavior designed, anticipate and prevent
certain specific types of norms.
18. LATEN TRAIT THEORY- Its affect the behavioral choices of all people equally regardless of
their gender and personal characteristics.
19. NEO- CLASSICAL CRIMINOLOGY- Which flourished during the nineteenth century had the
same basis as the classical school or belief in free will.
20. PERSONALITY- Defined as the reasonably stable patterns of behavior, including thoughts and
emotions that distinguish from one person to another.
21. PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT- Is the field of rules and regulations of member of professional
bodies.
22. PSYCHIATRY- Is a field of medicine in the understanding of diagnosis, treatment, and
prevention of mental problems.
23. PSYCHOPATH- Is a severe personality disorder, and often considered to be potentially
extremely dangerous.
24. PHRENOLOGY- Is based on the preposition that the exterior of skull corresponds to the
interior of the brains conformation.
25. PROFESSION- Is an occupation founded upon specialized education training to extend
knowledge, abilities, skills and services.
26. RATIONAL CHOICE THEORY- States that individuals rely on rational calculations to achieve
outcomes that are in line with their personal objectives.
27. RESEARCH DESIGN- Is a plan structure and strategy of investigation so conceived to obtain to
answer to research question or problem.
28. REGISTERED CRIMINOLOGIST- It refers to a natural person who holds a valid certificate of
registration and updated professional ID as criminologist.
29. SAMPLING- May be defined as measuring a small portion of something and then making a
general statement about the whole thing.
30. VICTIMOLOGY- Is the study of the etiology or causes of victimization, its consequences, how
the criminal justice system assists and accommodates victims.
