Introduction of the Author

The story that we will read today was

written by Edgar Allan Poe he is
credited as a pioneer in the genre of
detective fiction, but is more known for
his stories of horror and suspense. His
famous works include the poem The
Raven, The Fall of the House of Usher ,
and The Tell-Tale Heart. Poe married his
13-year-old cousin, and lived an
impoverished and difficult life, after
being orphaned shortly after birth.
According to popular opinion, Poe died
in a state of delirium in Baltimore at the
age of 40. Likely causes include drug or
alcohol dependence, but the truth has
never been uncovered.

2. Why does Montresor want Montresor sought revenge on

revenge? What was his criteria for a Fortunato because he had hurt Montresor
proper revenge? for years, and now he has insulted him,
and it has come to the final straw.

His criteria for revenge is not only to

punish but punish with impunity. A wrong
is unredressed when retribution overtakes
its redresser. It is equally unredressed
when the avenger fails to make himself
felt as such to him who has done the
wrong.

3. What part did the cask of wine Montresor cooks up a revenge plot to lure
play in the revenge? Fortunato back to his home and catacombs,
where he claims to be storing a unique and
rare wine, an Amontillado. Fortunato is a bit
naive but also claims to be a wine
connoisseur and must see this wine for
himself.

4. Does Montresor’s revenge meet Yes, Montresor achieves exactly the kind of
the criteria of impunity? How so? revenge he wants. He explains what he wants
in the opening paragraph of the story, and by
the end of the story he appears to be fully
satisfied with what he has done

5. Do you believe in the famous Yes, it is God alone that can take vengeance.
line, “Vengeance is not ours but the It is our duty not to lay hands and harm other
Lord’s”? people regarding the bad deeds they did
towards us.
