Proposed side column cross section, UC 305 x 305 x 198

Width of cross section, b = 314.5mm

Depth of cross section, h = 339.9mm
Thickness of web, tw= 19.1mm
Thickness of flange, tf = 31.4mm

∴ Use 450 x 450 x 16 mm base plate with grade S 275 steel .

If the end of the column is machined, then the load is assumed to be

transferred directly to the base plate and a minimum size of fillet weld of
6mm is used to connect the base plate to the column.

∴ Use6 mm fillet weld ¿ connect thebase plate ¿ column.

The base plate is subjected to a compressive force which is not transferred

to the holding down bolts. The bolts are therefore subjected only to
erection forces and if these are not know then experience has shown that a
bolt size approximately equal to the plate thickness is suitable.

∴ Use2 M 16 class 4.6 holding down bolts .
