Object: To investigate the effects of more than one voltage source in a network.

• Construct the circuit in Fig.1 and measure I1, I2 a and I3.

I1=…9.68…..mA .
I2=…12.51….mA.
I3=…-2.83…..mA.

• Disconnect 15 V supply and construct the circuit in Fig.2 and measure I’1,I’2 2 and
I’3.

Fig.2
I’1=…10.08…mA .
I’2=….9.58…..mA.
I’3=…0.51…..mA.

• Disconnect 20 V supply and construct the circuit in Fig. 3 and measure 1"1, 1"2 and
I"3.

Fig.3
I”1=…7.52…..mA .
I”2=…7.09…..mA.
I”3=…0.37…..mA.

Questions:

1. Do the current directions agree with those shown in Fig.1 ? No, I3 is in the opposite side.

2.Again, do the directions of the currents agree with those shown in Fig.2?

3.Can you notice any relationship between I1 and I' 1, I" 1? No there is any relation between
them.

4.Does the same relationship hold for I2 with I' 2 and I" 2 ,also l3 with I' 3 and I" 3 ? ? No there
is any relation between them.

5.Does the algebraic sum of the currents due to individual source equal the total currents due to
the two sources ? Yes, it does.

Conclusions (write a small paragraph of what you got from the experiment): The superposition
theorem states that a circuit with multiple voltage and current sources is equal to the sum of
simplified circuits using just one of the sources. A circuit composed of two voltage sources, for
example, will be equal to the sum of two circuits, each one using one of the sources and having
the other removed. To simplify a circuit using the superposition theorem, the following steps to
be followed: identify all current and voltage sources in the circuit; create multiple versions of the
circuit and the other sources must be removed using the following rule: voltage sources must be
replaced with a short circuit and current sources just removed from the circuit, every version
containing just one of the sources; find the currents and voltages required; and sum the results
obtained in all circuits.
