A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS FOR GRADE 07

MEASUREMENT

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, with 80% proficiency, the students will be able to:
a. solve problems involving conversion of units of English system to Metric
system and vice versa,
b. participate in group activities in converting various units of
measurements, and
c. skillfully perform the proper way of using various measuring tools and
conversion tables.

II. Subject Matter:

a. Topic : Basics Of Systems of Measurement
b. Reference : Integrative Mathematics through Experimental Approach
for Grade 07, by Carmelita U. Cruz, Ph. D; pages 181-
183
c. Materials : Projector, Ruler and Meterstick , Conversion Table
d. Teaching Strategies
: Teacher Dominated Approach (Measurement and
Systems of Measurement and Conversion)
: Discovery / Hands-on Learning (Usage of Measuring
Tools)

III. Procedures:
Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities

A. Routinary Activities:

“Good Morning Class!”

“Good Morning Sir Digma”
“Stand up everyone and let’s pray.
Ms._______, please lead the prayer.”
“Yes Sir.. everyone let’s pray,
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit Amen….
B. Review:

“Class, who among of you has the ideas about

measurement and measuring tools?” Some students raise their hands and speak
for their prior knowledge about the topic.
“Very Good!, In addition with that, measurement,
simply means the size, length, or amount of
something.”

“For example, Mr.______, please stand up.”

“How tall are you?” “Yes Sir, I’m just 5” feet tall.”

“Oh, that’s already measurement, do you

1 2
understand?”
“Yes Sir”
C. Motivation:

“For us to be able to easily get familiarized with

measurements, we will be having first a game.”

“Before that, I’ll group you into two, all boys are
group 1 and all girls are group 2, then we’ll play
longest line outside.”
“Oh, that’s so exciting!”
“The procedure goes like this; with all the things “What shall we do Sir?”
you have, create a line in just for 5 minutes.
Using a meter, get the exact measurement of
your line. The group with the longest line will win.
Do you understand?”
“Understand Sir!”
---------------THE GAME STARTS------------------
---------------THE GAME STARTS------------------
D. Presentation:

“We are done with our games. So class, what do

you learn about measurement?”

“Each group, please choose a representative to

discuss.”
Two representatives discuss…..
“Very good Class. However, you’ve just presented
the very basic of measurement. Everyone please
eyes on me and listen to my discussion.”

E. Discussion: “Yes Sir”

“Let us first define measurement.”

“Ms.______, may you please read what is

presented on the slide.”

“Very Good.” “Measurement is a size, length, or amount

known by measuring something.”
“We have two systems of measurement, the
Metric system and the English System.”

“When we say Metric System, it is a

measurement based on the meter and on the
kilogram, example units of this system are
meter(m) and centimeter(cm); while English
System, it is the foo-pound-second system of
units, example units of this are feet and yard.”
“Regarding to the proper use of measuring tools;
which the ruler and meterstick are most common

1 2
to us.”

“So class, do you have your ruler?”

“With the ruler you have, kindly get the length of “Yes Sir.”
your books. Use the most appropriate unit. As
you can see, the ruler as well as the meterstick
have 2 common parts. The first one, the upper
part is for Metric System Units in the form of cm
and dm and the other one, the lower part is the
English System unit which is the Inches.”

“Do you get it class?”

”So let us move to the conversion.” “Yes sir”

--Presentation of the Tables of Measurement--

--Presentation of the Tables of Measurement--

Table of Measurement / Conversion Table:

Metric System Conversion Table

10 mm 1 cm
10 cm 1 dm
10 dm 1m
10 m 1 dkm
10 dkm 1 hm
10 hm 1 km
1000 mm 1m
10 cm 1m
10 dm 1m
1/10 dkm 1m
1/100 hm 1m
1/1000 km 1m

Conversion Table for English to Metric System Units

1 inch 2.54 cm
1 foot 12 inches
1 yard 3 feet
1 meter 39.37 inches
1 mile 5280 ft
1 mile 1.6 km

 This tables are illustrated in the following examples:

1 2
1. 5.8 m = _____cm
5.8 m x = 580 cm

2. 68 dkm = _____dm
68 dkm x x = 6800 dm

3. 2 miles = _____m
2 miles x x = 3200 m

4. 1.5 m = _____inches
1.5 m x x = 59 inches

 Examples of problem of system of measuremnets:

1. If Ron’s height is 5 feet and 2 inches, what is its equivalent to inches?

Solution: Convert 5 ft. to inches:

5 ft. x = 60 inches + 2 inches = 62 inches

2. If the distance of your house to your school is 8 km., what is its distance in miles?

Solution: Convert 8 km. to miles

8 km. x = 5 miles

F. Developmental Activity:

I. Individual: 1.1 Convert the following units of measurements. You can use
the tables as your guide. Show your solution and write this in 1 whole pad
paper.

1. 85 miles to meter =
2. 800 meter to inches =
3. 35 km to feet =
4. 500 m to dkm =
5. 6 miles to cm =

I.2 Solve the proble involving Systems of Measurement.

1 2
1. Rezel throws a ball, and the ball reaches 253 meter apart from her. What is the
distance of the ball to Rezel in inches? In feet? In centimeter? Show your solution.

II. Group Activity:

The class will be divided into three groups. Anything inside the classroom, each
group will choose an object (e.g. table, chair, board). Using a ruler or a
meterstick, get the dimension of an object using appropriate Metric and English
System units.

G. Generalization:

“Anyone who can summarize our lesson for

today?” Students raise their hands

“Okay, Ms._______.” “Generalizing our topic for today about

“measurement.” Measurement means the
size or amount of something known through
the use of measuring tools. It has two
systems, the Metric and English System. Our
common tools for measurements are the ruler
“Very good!” and meterstick.”

“Is there anyone in the class who can share Students raise their hands
what you’ve learned?”

Yes, Mr._________” “Aside from what she said earlier, I also

learned about how to convert correctly the
different measuring units of different
measuring systems. I learned also how to
use precisely the conversion table.”
“Very good!”

“Is there still any question?” “No more question Sir.”

“So we can now have a quiz!”

IV. Evaluation:
Quizzes:

1 2
I. Using the table of conversion convert the given value into different
measuring units. Show your solution. Write this in one whole pad paper.

1. Convert 752 miles into:

a. kilometer :
b. feet :
c. inches :
d. meter :
e. yard :

II. In your own words, explain the following:

1. Measurement:
2. Systems of Measurement
3. Measuring tools and usage

V. Assignment:

I. Determine the distance of your house to your school. Specify what measuring tool you
will use. With the distance you will get, write it in the form of:

1. miles
2. kilometers
3. feet

4. inches

5. centimeters
II. Answer pages 184-186 on your textbook. Write you answer on one whole pad paper.

III. On one whole pad paper, draw any measuring tool. Discuss its usage and the unit/s
of measurement it uses.
IV. Review our next topic: “Linear Measure”
