Maintenance (EIM), Page 46
➢ Topic: Measurements and Calculations
➢ Objectives: Perform a specific task using appropriate measuring device for
specific task and be able to compute the given data.

Let Us Discover

Measurement is the process or the result of determining the ratio of a physical quantity,
such as a length, time, temperature, etc., to units of measurement, such as the meter,
second, or degree Celsius. The science of measurement is called metrology.
The two types of system of measurements are:
❖ English system is the foot-pound-second system of units such as inch, yard, and miles.
❖ Metric system is a decimalized system of measurement and is based on the meter and
the kilogram such as millimeter, centimeter, decimeter, and meter.

Reading Current using Ammeter Reading size of the wire using Wire Gauge
and Caliper

Reading measurements varies in type and the

capacity of measuring tools to be used. The
sample illustrations range only at 15 amperes;
Small hand scale- 0 to 1 ampere counted 0.2
mA per graduations.
In a small illustration on the left side, the reading
starts at 0 to the first graduation with 0.2mA, next Steps:
counted as 0.4Ma, next to 0.6mA, and so on to 1. Prepare the wire to be measured.
reach long hand scale ranging as 1 amp. The 2. In reading, look at the size of the wire and the
same procedure is used to count up to 2amp, size of holes and compare for immediate

Longhand scale- 0 to 15 amperes counted as 1 3. If your wire fits with measuring holes, then read
ampere per graduations. measurements and if you are using caliper
just fit insulator or open conductor wire and
read measurements.
4. Reading begins with 0, the bigger size, and
ends with 36, a hair-thin wire.
CALCULATIONS
Conversion of Units
Conversion Sample Computations b. 24 inches to _____cm c. 3 feet to ________cm
Table a. 85 cm to _____inch Since 2.54 cm is equal Since 12 inches is equal
1 inch = 2.54 cm Since 1 inch is equal to to 1 inch to 1 foot, and 2.54cm is
1 foot = 30.48 cm 2.54 cm Solution: equal to 1 inch
2.54 cm
1 yard = 91.44 m Solution: 24 inches X Solution:
1 inch
1 yard = 36 inches 85 cm X 1 inch 36 inches =_______cm
2.54 cm =24 X 2.54 2.54 cm
10 mm =1 cm
85 36 inches X
10 cm =1 dm = =60.96 cm 1 inch
2.54 = 36 X 2.54
10 dm =1m
=33.46 inches = 91.44 cm

Let Us Try

Directions: Look at the illustration or drawing below. Read the graduation indicated by the test item.
The reading is in centimeter/millimeter if it is in Metric System, and in inches, if it is in
English System.
