1. Rationale
In today's era of globalization, English is considered as the international language
that plays an important role in the exchange and integration among countries all
over the world. Therefore, English is widely used in most areas such as education,
economics, science, tourism, etc. In Vietnam, English can be considered an
important factor, creating opportunities for self-development and career
advancement. Learning English has become common necessity at all levels of
education today, anyone can need to learn a foreign language to develop
communication skills and apply it to life. It is said that learning English is like
building a house, in addition to understanding the grammar, vocabulary is the
fundamental factor that helps you understand the language, not only the
denotations you learn in the dictionary but also the connotations in the linguistic
culture of the native people. There are many commonly used methods of learning
vocabulary such as reading bilingual newspapers, watching movies, and listening
to English music, ... There are too many vocabulary learning methods but finding
the appropriate and effective one for the individual is not easy.
The researchers realize that flashcards, compared to other methods, of learning
English vocabulary, are currently the most popular method. Therefore, we would
like to delve into the positive effects of using flashcards in learning vocabulary by
English-majored freshmen at the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Research Objectives
In this study, our team wanted to determine the frequency scale of using
flashcards to learn the English vocabulary of the English-majored freshmen at the
Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, our team hoped to find out
the factors affecting attitude of English-majored freshmen at the Industrial
University of Ho Chi Minh City when using flashcards in learning English
vocabulary. And finally, the researchers shall find out how to use the flashcards
most effectively for learners. These ways can help learners improve themselves
vocabulary when learning english.
3. Research Questions
- How much frequency rate of using flashcards to learn the English vocabulary of
the English-majored freshmen at the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City?
- What are the factors affecting the attitude of English-majored freshmen at the
Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City when using flashcards in learning
English vocabulary?
- How use the flashcards most effective ways for English-majored freshmen at the
Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City in learning English vocabulary?
4. Scope of research
The scope of the study is the positive effects of using flashcards in learning
vocabulary, the research occurred at the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City
with the main participants who are English-majored freshmen of the Faculty of
Foreign Languages. Because of time limitations and a large number of English-
majored freshmen as well, the researchers will invite participants from each class
to complete the survey questionnaire with 50 English-majored freshmen at the
FFL, in IUH over three months (from March-May). Because of these constraints,
the researcher is supposed to do research in just a group of students, then solicit
students' viewpoints. From there, the researchers assert the positive effects of using
flashcards in learning vocabulary.
