RAMPANT FAKE NEWS

Ilocos Norte Rep. Sandro Marcos, stated in a video that was going around on TIKTOK that the Indonesian Sovereign
Wealth Fund had made $23 billion after investing it for a year. Some news outlets, including News 5, called this claim
inaccurate.

Marcos tried to explain the plan that would create the Maharlika Investment Fund as a means of supporting
underfunded government initiatives. He named fellow ASEAN members Singapore and Indonesia as examples of
nations that have established sovereign wealth funds.

The SWF for Indonesia, the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA), was in fact created in 2021. But as of late October
2022, it had only $6.5 billion in assets under administration after receiving an initial $5 billion from the government.
And that was far from the claim made by Sandro Marcos, a representative from Ilocos Norte.

Since Marcos and his relatives proposed the Maharlika Wealth Fund and many people are concerned that it will only
be used for their benefit, the Journalist must address this false information.

News 5 criticized making up lies like this because they can mislead readers or individuals to support their own
irrational goal. Giving citizens the knowledge they need to make the best decisions for their life is the objective of
journalism, which is a fact- and verification-based discipline.

There is a lot of fake news on social media, especially on the TIKTOK platform where it can be manipulated and
slanted, thus it's crucial to have a reliable source of information or do some preliminary research before sharing it
because it could have disastrous or even worse consequences.

Journalism plays a role in influencing the public's ideas, so when you release news, you don't just supply data; you
also provide information, and it depends on the reader as to how they will understand the news because we can only
present the news; we cannot be the news.

In journalism, stating the truth is always the primary rule, and if decisions need to be taken, they must take precedence
over all other ethical considerations. Reporters and journalists should always present the public with accurate and
genuine news that is supported by strong evidence. The readers of credible news should always be able to completely
comprehend all the details, facts, and situations.
