Activity Title : UNION AND INTERSECTION OF SETS Date:
Learning Competency : The learner illustrates the union and intersection of sets and the difference of two
sets. (M7NS-Ia-2)
Learning Target : To perform the set operations: Union and Intersection
Reference : MSA Elem. Algebra by Alferez and Duro in pp. 4 – 5

The Union of two sets A and B, written AUB, is the set which consists of all elements that belong
either to A or to B or to both. Informally, A U B is formed by putting all the elements of A and B together.
The following Venn diagram illustrates this definition.

EXAMPLES: Find the union of the given pairs of sets.

SOLUTION
a. { 1 , 2 , 3} U { 3, 4, 5, 6} { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
b. { 4, 5, 6} U  {4, 5, 6}
c. { a, c, e} U {x, y, z} {a, c, e, x, y, z}

The Intersection of two sets A and B, written A∩ B, is the set of all elements common to sets A
and B.
The figures below display A∩ B. Observe that two sets are disjoint if and only if their intersection
is an empty set.

EXAMPLES: Find the intersection of the given pairs of sets.

SOLUTION
a. { e, f , g } ∩{3, 4, 5, 6} 
b. {4, 5, 6} ∩{4, 8, 10} {4}
c. {m, s, a} ∩{m, a, t, h, s} {m, s, a}
EXERCISES:
Given the following sets: A = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4} B = {0, 2, 4, 6, 8} C= {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

Determine the elements of the ff.

2. A∩B 4. (A U B) ∩ C
