Activity Title : COMPLEMENT AND DIFFERENCE OF SETS
Learning Competency : The learner illustrates the union and intersection of sets and the difference of two sets.
(M7NS-Ia-2)
Learning Target : To find the complement and difference of the given sets

Reference : Grade VII Math Module

The complement of Set A, written as A’, is the set of all elements in the universal set, U, that
are not in A. Complement of a set can be illustrated through this Venn diagram:

EXAMPLES: Determine the elements of the required sets.

Given: Let U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} A= {2, 4} B= {1, 5}
Find: SOLUTION
A’ = {1, 3, 5}
B’ = {2, 3, 4}
A’ U B’ = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
A’ ∩ B’ = {3}
A’ ∩B = {1, 5}
A ∩B’ = {2, 4}

The relative complement or set difference of sets A and B, denoted A – B or A B, is the set of all
elements in A that are not in B.

EXAMPLES: Find the difference of the two sets.

Find A – B. SOLUTION
Given: A = { 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9} B = { 1, 2, 4, 6} {7, 8, 9}
EXERCISES:
A. Determine the elements of the required sets.
Let U = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} A = {5, 7, 9} B = {1, 5, 7, 9}
1. A’ =
2. B’ =
3. A’ U B =
4. A’ U B’ =
5. A’ ∩B =
6. A’ ∩B’ =
7. (B – A)’ =
8. U–B =
