You will appreciate more the concepts and the use of Venn Diagram as you work through different
word problems that involve three sets. Hint: Work from the intersection of the three sets.
EXAMPLES:
1. In a survey, students were asked about their favorite subjects. The results are as follows:
132 students like Math 36 students like Math and Science
163 students like Science 38 students like Math and English
73 students like English 22 students like all three subjects
51 students like Science and English
Using a Venn diagram, determine (a) the number of students who like Math Only
(b) Science only
SOLUTION: (c) English only
(d) The total number of students in the survey

Answers: (a) There are 80 students who like Math only.


(b) There are 98 students who like Science only.
(c) There are 6 students who like English only.
(d) The total number of students in the survey is 265.
EXERCISES:
1. Draw a Venn diagram and answer the questions.
A survey of 100 students of Tubigon West National High School revealed that 30 played
basketball, 25 played badminton, 40 played volleyball, 10 played basketball and badminton, 15
played badminton and volleyball, 20 played basketball and volleyball and 8 played all three sports.
a. How many played volleyball and badminton but not basketball?
b. How many played basketball only?
c. How many did not play any of these sports?
2. Formulate your own word problem that involves three sets and draw a Venn diagram to illustrate
it.
