ABSTRACT

Aveline, Meliantha I. (2020). The Process of Composing Descriptive Essays of the English Education Study Program Students. Thesis,
English Department Study Program Faculty of Teachers’ Training And Education, Widya Mandala Catholic University. Advisor:
Dr. V. Luluk Prijambodo, M.Pd.

English is an international language widely used in every country in the world. As an international language, English is very
important to learn. Indonesian students also need to develop their English competence. Writing is a complex process that involves
generating and developing ideas, analysing the meaning, and making decisions about the contents, forms, organizations, and styles. In
other words, writing is an open process of discovery. Students are still thinking that writing skill is a really difficult and complex
process to be mastered.
Concerning the composing process, this study is intended to describe the composing process of the English Education Study
Program students in writing essays. The source of the research data of this quantitative study was the participants’ answers to the
online questionnaire distributed by the researcher.
The findings show that the students under study wrote their essay through the three stages: pre/before writing, whilst/while
wiritng in English, and post/ when revising stages though the percentage varied. Some other related and
important aspects were also found in this study Petric, Czarl (2003). Based on these findings, the researcher suggests three important
points. First, it is suggested that another study on other writing genres be conducted. Second, it is suggested that to improve the
student's skill in writing descriptive essays, teachers provide good explanation about composing process to their students.
