Lesson 10 – Spine Break

This painful-sounding area is where the legs fold over the dorsal spines. The result is a two-unit
(four half-unit) space with no spines. In the full model, you won’t know until you glue the scales
around the body exactly where to make the spine break. You could guess (or follow the official
crease pattern) and end up in the right place, but you may also wish to have your break be one
half-unit (or two!) longer. Because of this, I’m not including any precreases for the actual break,
and that way you can decide where to start and end it when you work on the whole thing.

The 6x24 grid represents only 3x12 units of the full 96x96, but takes place at the edge of the
scale pleats, where there are many 192nds.

The paper used in this guide is a 5”x20” (12cm x 48cm) sheet of duo kraft, which is much
oversized. I recommend using a smaller sheet, around 10” (24cm) on the long side.
