Lesson 4 – Scales and belly pleats

This lesson shows the collapsing sequence for the scales that run along the body. The scales on
the arms will have a different collapse. The belly pleats are included as well as just a few units of
the “other side” of body scales.

The precreases during this test fold are shown with a few computer-aided sketches. Some of the
collapse is shown only in photographs without text explanations, so be careful to match your
model’s orientation and layering with the guide.

Although this guide begins with an 18x18 grid, it represents only 9x9 units of the full model’s
96x96 divisions. It is meant as an introduction to the proper layering of pleats. Lesson 5 will
feature the scales in their natural setting in the model.

The paper used in this guide is duo kraft, oversized (16” / 41 cm) for reasons of photo clarity. I
recommend instead standard or large kami for your own fold.
