Reflection no.6: Basic Concepts of Gender and Development

Gender and sex are two ideas that commonly lead to misunderstandings. Despite having
distinct meanings, they are sometimes used synonymously. Despite the fact that sex is frequently
classified as either female or male, there are differences in the biological characteristics that make
up sex and how those traits manifest, and sex is a collection of biological characteristics present
in both humans and animals. Girls, women, men, and people of all genders all have roles,
behaviors, expressions, and identities that are socially formed. Since gender identity is not limited
to the dichotomy of "man" or "woman," it exists on a continuum and is subject to change. People's
actions, interactions, and perspectives of themselves and others are all influenced by their
gender. It also affects how society allocates authority and resources.

The term "gender and development" (GAD) refers to the establishment of a processes and
attitudes that are pro-self-determination, pro-inclusive, pro-sustainable, pro-violence-free, and
pro-actualization of human potential. It questions whether the gender roles that society has given
to men and women are acceptable and aims to change the social, economic, and political systems
of society. It also aims to realize gender equality as a fundamental objective that ought to be
considered while making development decisions. Gender equality benefits all parties involved—
men, women, and kids. It also addresses racial discrimination while advancing business and the
economy. Even if it will take some time for gender equality to be widely accepted, we have made
strides to see its benefits in daily life. The present goal is to continue developing gender equality
while destroying outdated, prejudice-based structures.
