Reflection no.6: Basic Concepts of Gender and Development

Gender and sex are two ideas that commonly lead to misunderstandings. Despite having
distinct meanings, they are sometimes used synonymously. Despite the fact that sex is
frequently classified as either female or male, there are differences in the biological
characteristics that make up sex and how those traits manifest, and sex is a collection of
biological characteristics present in both humans and animals. Girls, women, men, and people
of all genders all have roles, behaviors, expressions, and identities that are socially formed.
Since gender identity is not limited to the dichotomy of "man" or "woman," it exists on a
continuum and is subject to change. People's actions, interactions, and perspectives of
themselves and others are all influenced by their gender. It also affects how society allocates
authority and resources.

The term "gender and development" (GAD) refers to the establishment of a processes
and attitudes that are pro-self-determination, pro-inclusive, pro-sustainable, pro-violence-free,
and pro-actualization of human potential. It questions whether the gender roles that society has
given to men and women are acceptable and aims to change the social, economic, and political
systems of society. It also aims to realize gender equality as a fundamental objective that ought
to be considered while making development decisions. Gender equality benefits all parties
involved—men, women, and kids. It also addresses racial discrimination while advancing
business and the economy. Even if it will take some time for gender equality to be widely

accepted, we have made strides to see its benefits in daily life. The present goal is to continue
developing gender equality while destroying outdated, prejudice-based structures.
