Lesson – 06

REVISION SESSION 2078

Calculation of electrical energy consumed (EC)

#Define 1 Watt hour ?

It is the electrical energy spent by an electrical

appliance of power 1 watt in 1 hour.

Mathematically,

1 watt hour = 1 watt * 1 hour

= 1 watt * 60 *60 s

= 1 J/s * 3600 s

= 3600 Joules.
#Define 1kilowatt hour?

It is the electrical energy spent by an electrical

appliance of power 1 kilowatt in 1 hour.

Mathematically,

1 kilowatt hour = 1 kilowatt * 1 hour

= 1000 watt * 60 * 60 s

= 1000 J/s * 3600 s

= 3600000 joules

= 3.6 * 106 Joules

Formula for energy consumption (EC)

Energy consumed (EC) = Power (in kw) * Time (in hour)

EC = P * t

Total cost = No. of units (EC) * Cost of 1 unit

Or

Cost = Rate * EC
#An electric heater of rating 1.5 kW connected to
main supply of 220 V is used for 6 hours daily for
30 days. Calculate electrical energy consumption by
the electric heater in 30 days? (1kwh = 1unit)

Solution ,

For electric heater,

Energy consumed in one day

E=p*t

= 1.5 * 6 = 9 kWh = 9 units

Now ,

Total energy consumed in 30 days = 9 *30 = 270

kWh = 270 units

= 270
units

If cost of one unit is Rs.10 than

Cost of 270 units = 270 * 10 = Rs.2700

transformer is 5 times more than that in secondary
coil. Caclulate the secondary voltage if the
primary voltage is 220 V.
