CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study


The COVID-19 pandemic had a major effect on the lives of the people. Many people
facing challenges that are stressful, overwhelming, and cause strong emotions in adults
and children. Public health actions, such as social distancing, are necessary to reduce
the spread of COVID-19, and it makes people feel isolated and lonely and can increase
stress and anxiety. Learning to cope with stress is a healthy way. According to Essel and
Owusu (2017) stated that, there are two factors causing stress: the personal factors,
which include change in the living environment, sleeping habits and financial difficulties;
and the environmental factors, comprised of computer problems and bad living
conditions, to name a few (Porto, J.A., Vargas, A.A., & Collao, M.E.P. ,2016).
enumerated several strategies to cope with stress, such as: being honest with yourself
about all the things that are going on in your life; managing your time; developing a
healthy lifestyle habit that will enhance your resistance to stress; keeping a diary of
things that seem to cause you stress; being positive and optimistic; focusing on the
pleasant aspects of your life and ways to improve your situation; and not procrastinating.
Furthermore, the many ways to beat stress may be categorized into different aspects:
physical, emotional, social, and behavioral.
On this time of pandemic stress is already common in the lives of every student
who experience different learning modality. Mental health is very important among
students especially in this time of pandemic. The mode of learning was changed,
students need to adjust and be more flexible on studies. Researchers observed that
students got stress to deal with studies because of the new mode of learning since there
is no face to face wherein teachers are very hands-on to the students.
The researchers observed that Grade 12 HUMSS students at Guimbal National
High School have their full schedule in school work, academic performances, and other
school related activities causing a lot of stress especially students need to adjust and be
more flexible because it is still pandemic. This motivated the researchers to conduct this
study in order to provide findings about stress management techniques during pandemic
time of Grade 12 HUMSS OF GNHS.

This study can contribute to the Grade 12 HUMSS students in a way that they
could identify what are the appropriate stress management techniques to consider as
they go through the rigors of academic stress, especially if they lack adequate coping
knowledge. In addition, this study will help them to manage their stress level and can
maintain a healthy mind and away from any stressors.

Theoretical Framework
The transactional model of stress by Lazarus and Folkman(1984) is employed
increasingly frequently. It posits mutual interactions between people and their
environment. This model served as the theoretical basis of the current study. Particular
attention is paid to the processes of coping with stress, which decide the positive and
negative impact of stress on the individual. Using different management techniques with
stress involves mobilizing cognitive and behavioral resources to meet the demands
which are subjectively perceived as surpassing personal capabilities. The course of the
coping process depends on personal resources and social support. It can also lead to
various behaviors which have negative health effects (substance use) or are
maladaptive. Coping with stress might be related to negative health behaviors .
According to Metzger et al. analyzed the frequency of negative health behaviors
among students. They found that increased alcohol consumption and risky sexual
behaviors are typical for people at risk for significant stress. Styles of coping with stress
are determined by gender, education, age, health, well-being, the nature of the stressful
situation, personality factors, and others . This theoretical framework related to our study
because it applies on how students managed their stress during pandemic.

Conceptual Framework
This study attempts to contribute the data on stress management techniques
during pandemic time of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Science Students, the
conceptual framework of this study of the Senior high school students. Figure 1 shows
the variable of the study
The Independent Variables are strand classified as to STEM, HUMSS, ABM, TVL
and sex classified as Male and Female. The Dependent Variable is the stress
management techniques during pandemic time.

Statement of the Problem


This study aims to discuss about what is the purpose of stress management
techniques among senior high school students in Guimbal National High School, during
school year 2021-2022.
Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:
1.What are the different management techniques during pandemic employed by senior
high school students when taken as a whole?
2. What are the different management techniques during pandemic employed by senior
high school students when classified according to year level, strand, and sex?
3. Is there a significant difference in the management techniques during pandemic
employed by senior high school students when grouped according to year level, strand,
and sex?
