3. About internship

The online internship at InspecNDT from 14/04/2021 to 26/05/2021 provided flexible hours to work.
My responsibilities were to design, research and develop 3D models for specific parts working
alongside team members and assisting in other various activities if required. In the internship, we had
worked on the product research & development area for the Ultrasonic Probe Holder & the
development of the Weld Scanner used in TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) Inspection.

Firstly in the initial stage we were explained about different techniques used in NDT. Technique
which was used in our product development is briefly explained as below:

3.1 Fundamentals of NDT

There are two methods of receiving the ultrasound waveform, reflection and attenuation.

In reflection (or pulse-echo) mode, the transducer performs both the sending and the receiving of the
pulsed waves as the "sound" is reflected to the device. Reflected ultrasound comes from an interface,
such as the back wall of the object or from an imperfection within the object. The diagnostic machine
displays these results in the form of a signal with an amplitude representing the intensity of the
reflection and the distance, representing the arrival time of the reflection.

In attenuation (or through-transmission) mode, a transmitter sends ultrasound through one surface,
and a separate receiver detects the amount that has reached it on another surface after traveling
through the medium. Imperfections or other conditions in the space between the transmitter and
receiver reduce the amount of sound transmitted, thus revealing their presence.

( 1
TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction)

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is a nondestructive ultrasonic testing (UT) used to look for flaws
in welds. TOFD uses the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse to find the location of a reflector. TOFD
is based on diffraction of ultrasonic waves on tip of discontinuities. TOFD Uses longitudinal
(compression) waves. It is used for weld overlays and the heat affected zones of components as well
such as piping, pressure vessels, clad material, storage tanks, and structural steel.

TOFD works by emitting sound waves into a component and measuring the time from them to
return. TOFD uses a pair of ultrasonic transducers, one as a transmitter(emits an ultrasonic pulse) and
the other as a receiver(receives pulse). The low frequency waves propagate at an angle and only
diffract back to the receiver if they hit a defect. The time it takes for both waves to make it to the
receiver can be used to create a complete image of the weld and identify the size and location of the
damage.

3.2 About Project

The TOFD & PAUT are new generation ultrasonic inspection techniques, which are more capable of
faster and quality testing. As shown in fig C specific holders and scanner arrangement are required
for probes to effectively execute the testing. As the internship proceed I have to develop 3-D Models
of weld scanner some of the component which I design like wedge, blocks, cable sleeve management
etc. I have to do market survey of all the components and discuss about that with the team and after
that the designing starts.

4. Learning outcome from internship
This internship provided a great learning opportunity to me. The key learning outcome are as follow:

 Acquired fundamental knowledge about different NDT techniques

 Used and learnt about Autodesk Fusion 360

 Learnt about the process of product designing

 Conducted virtual meetings, brainstorming session and discussions

 Cultivated my internet surfing skill and decision making skill

 Improved my PPT making/editing skills

 Learnt how to maintain and develop relationship with the suppliers

 Learnt about procedure of research and development for a product

5. Conclusion

The internship over the period four weeks has helped me develop lot of understanding and fundamental

knowledge about non destructive testing. This online internship gave a practical exposure in the field of

research and development of weld scanner used in TOFD. Also apart from the technical aspects, I also

understood the importance of team work, while working with the team. This internship helped me to

cultivate my modeling skill in fusion 360 and also encourage me to learn more about different

modeling software. This internship has truly been an excellent and rewarding experience.
