The purpose of our study was to describe the effects of menstrual cramps on the academic performance
of students.

We want to understand women’s experiences during their menstruation period specifically regarding
menstrual cramps, whether it really affected their education or not, how the students deal with the
impacts of menstrual cramps, and to also provide a recommendation that can help the students engage
more on their academic performance.
ABSTRACT

The present study examined the effects of menstrual cramps and how it affects the
academic performance of selected eight (8) female students of Pamantasan Ng Cabuyao
Senior High School. Our research intends to emphasize their experiences and how they
overcome menstrual cramps and discover strategies for tolerating their monthly problems
while also pursuing academic excellence.

cycle and the relationship between dysmenorrhea and sleep. The participants
were 89 female college students. Analyses revealed variability in two measures of
nighttime wakefulness across the menstrual cycle, as well as variability in global
measures of sleep and a measure of nighttime wakefulness as a function of
dysmenorrhea severity. Additionally, measures of dysmenorrhea were directly
correlated with scores on the Insomnia Severity Index and the Pittsburgh Sleep
Quality Index. Further, participants having insomnia rated their dysmenorrhea as
being more severe and causing more interference with daily activities than
participants not having insomnia. The results are discussed with implications for
future research

The researchers discuss the effects of menstrual cramps wherein depth of

knowledge, creativity, and rational thinking are involved. One of the main issues
in this study is the student's menstrual pain, because absenteeism can have an
impact on academic performance. The research was conducted using a qualitative
research design, and the various sources of data collection from the respondents
in our study are conducting interviews, data analysis, analysis of the answers
given by the respondents, and interpretation of data with consent from the
chosen respondents.

Menstrual cramps have a significant adverse effect on a student's academic performance.
The study's primary aim was to understand better women's menstrual experiences,
specifically menstrual cramps, whether it affected their academic performance, how
students deal with the effects of menstrual cramps, and to provide recommendations to help
students engage more in their academic performance. Menstrual cramps are a typical
problem for women during their menstrual cycle, and they frequently cause absenteeism
from school or work. This study will look into how severe menstrual cramps are for
academic performance and determine whether there are any effective treatments for these
symptoms.

The effects of primary menstrual pain include activity disorders such as high absence rates
from schoolwork, social life limitations, academic performance, and sports activities. The
problem of dysmenorrhea also affects the decrease in quality of life due to not attending
school or work (Parker, Sneddon, & Arbon, 2010).

Periods have been associated with numerous myths that are often perceived by
females that have caused them to apply in their real-life situations and put them
on the wrong side of the table for many years. In medieval times, there was a
shortage of knowledge and proper needs in menstruation. According to Yoppie
(2020), apart from the fact that it has a lack of knowledge and practices
concerning this topic, Certainly, there has been an insufficiency of change in the
woman's menstrual cycle throughout the years. Hoosier Sanitary Belt was a
popular choice for most women throughout the Victorian era, from the mid-
1800s until the 1920s.
Therefore, this study proposes that Female Senior High Learners must see the
significance of menstrual cramps in their daily school activities and be more open
and knowledgeable regarding this issue. Several researchers have already looked
into this topic; according to some of their significant findings, menstrual
symptoms are multidimensional, which leads to a lack of interest among students
and may have a significant negative impact on their academic performance. This
research topic will be an excellent starting point for addressing the stigma and
taboos associated with menstruation. In particular, this study aims to dig deeper
into a student's real-life experiences to address, understand, and learn more
about how female students dealt with their monthly challenges.
Participants of the study, as aforementioned, will be students from SJISC. Specifically, Grade 11 students
from STEM-B will be the participants on the study. Choosing the respondents, through Random
Sampling, participants will be easier to acquire but of course, with their permission to be a part of the
said study. Stable communication will not be a problem for both the researchers and respondents as
they will choose which time and day, they will be interviewed so there will be lesser interruptions from
either an internet or personal matters.

What possible solutions are suggested by the Selected 11-ESTEM Health Students
participants?

The researchers discussed the effects of menstrual cramps on the first box,
wherein rational thinking is involved. One of the main issues in this study is the
student's menstrual pain; absenteeism can have an impact on academic
performance. A qualitative research design was used for this study. In the second
box, the various sources of data collection from the respondents in our study
conducted interviews, data analysis, analysis of the answers given by the
respondents, and interpretation of data with consent from the chosen
respondents are shown. Lastly, the third box contains the output or the possible
outcome of the study, such as awareness among 11ESTEM Health students about
the effects of menstrual cramps on academic performance and menstrual cramps
experiences.
2.4 Does having period pains interfere with your ability to concentrate and engage
in class? How?

This question is contained in SOP 2 wherein inquiring if there is a time that students have a hard time
concentrating in your class because of menstrual cramps. This question can be seen the how menstrual
cramps affect their concentration.

2.5 Have you ever struggled to pass your schoolwork on time and receive a failing
grade due to menstrual cramps? Can you describe what happened?

This question is presented in SOP 2 wherefore, aiming to if the student already experience
struggling in passing her school works or received a failing grade because of menstrual
cramps. It will show the experiences of the students who encounter this phenomenon.

3.1 Were you able to develop your own coping mechanisms or approaches to allow
you to manage your academic responsibilities while enduring menstrual cramps

The point of this question aligned with SOP 3 is to determine if the participants can develop
their coping strategy in terms of managing the pain due to menstrual cramps. It seeks if
how the students handle menstrual cramps on their own.

Participants of the study, as aforementioned, will be students from Pamantasan Ng Cabuyao.

Specifically, Grade 11 students from STEM-Health will be the participants on the study. Choosing the
respondents, through Random Sampling, participants will be easier to acquire but of course, with their

A pleasant morning, I am Marilyn Rebato, and I am here to give you an insight into the background of
our study. It will explain where and when it starts as well as, walk you through its history. The historical
context of the study will force you to confront the reality of how women and society at the time lacked a
proper understanding of this topic. Furthermore, you can see how they viewed menstruation as
"unclean" and "dirty" and how, in the past, women were not permitted or allowed to use pain relievers
due to some restrictions. As a result, they were able to devise and develop herbal home remedies to
alleviate the pain. You can also see a timeline of the evolution and progression of various methods of
regulating menstruation over the years, as well as how they changed over time. We conducted the study
because we believe that female senior high students should be more open and aware of the significance
of menstrual cramps in their academic performance. Not only them but the entire society must begin to
shift their perspectives and narratives about this issue, and how this type of research topic will be an
excellent starting point for addressing the stigma and taboos associated with menstruation.

What is the importance of your study, to you as atudent, in society, and in school (e.g PnC)

Our study aims to evaluate how menstrual cramps affect students' academic performance,
and their experiences with dealing with pain while studying, as well as to provide factual
information about the significant effects of menstrual cramps or to simply serve as an
awareness and to help by suggesting potential solutions to help manage the effects of
menstrual cramps. This research provides additional evidence-based information on the
existing knowledge about this topic. This will be of great significance to various institutions,
organizations, or even us (researchers) and future researchers planning to investigate the
same matter. As previously said, this is an excellent opportunity for us (health students) to
begin our medical journey by learning about the natural biological processes of women and
human in general. Furthermore, one of the reasons we chose this topic is to address the
stigma and encourage people in society and schools that menstruation is not a bad thing,
and that menstruation or menstrual cramps should not be disregardedIn addition, if we
succeed in raising this awareness, people will be knowledgeable in terms of menstrual
cramps, not only female students but all people in society, including boys and teachers.
