CHAPTER I
Introduction
Some students may engage in juvenile delinquency like vises and sometimes they may
not attend to their classes. Students may also engage in untoward acts that may lead to
trouble, especially at tertiary level, they must be monitored and at times of guided by the
teachers/advisers. The relationship of family, friends and a change of their environment from
their home, school and other places are being challenge, youth nowadays are pressured from
transaction of being a childhood to become an independent person at an early age, especially
when they have to deal with the reality of their environment such as poverty, rapid growth of
population, with insufficient services and house to live in, their need for their self in such a
confusing stage of their lives.
Newman (2002) Some of the most common vices that young delinquents may involve
are the following: cigarette smoking, drinking liquors or being alcoholic. Vices in general which
is considered as immoral and degrading based in the norms of society can often be associated
with criminal offenses.
Cook and Skogan (2008) Postulated that rapid population growth, the unavailability of housing
and support services, poverty, unemployment and underemployment among youth, the decline
in the authority of local communities, overcrowding in poor urban areas, the disintegration of
the family, and ineffective educational system are some of the pressures young people must
deal with. Youth nowadays, regardless of gender, social origin or country of residence, are
subject to individual risks but are also being presented with new individual opportunities-some
beneficial and some potentially harmful. Quite often, advantage is being taken of illegal
opportunities as young people commit various offences, become addicted to drugs, and use
violence against their peers.
there are four causes or reasons why teenagers become of juvenile delinquents can be
made such as broken family, lack of communication, lack of finances and lack of social and
moral training. (Alcantara, CJ.R.2019)
first is broken family, where bad family relationship can cause the child to become
violent and make him/her seek attention from other people. Second, lack of communication
can make the child to lose its trust and understanding that will cause him/her to have a lower
self-esteem and self-confidence.
