CHAPTER I

Introduction

Some students may engage in juvenile delinquency like vises and sometimes they may
not attend to their classes. Students may also engage in untoward acts that may lead to
trouble, especially at tertiary level, they must be monitored and at times of guided by the
teachers/advisers. The relationship of family, friends and a change of their environment from
their home, school and other places are being challenge, youth nowadays are pressured from
transaction of being a childhood to become an independent person at an early age, especially
when they have to deal with the reality of their environment such as poverty, rapid growth of
population, with insufficient services and house to live in, their need for their self in such a
confusing stage of their lives.

Newman (2002) Some of the most common vices that young delinquents may involve
are the following: cigarette smoking, drinking liquors or being alcoholic. Vices in general which
is considered as immoral and degrading based in the norms of society can often be associated
with criminal offenses.

Cook and Skogan (2008) Postulated that rapid population growth, the unavailability of housing
and support services, poverty, unemployment and underemployment among youth, the decline
in the authority of local communities, overcrowding in poor urban areas, the disintegration of
the family, and ineffective educational system are some of the pressures young people must
deal with. Youth nowadays, regardless of gender, social origin or country of residence, are
subject to individual risks but are also being presented with new individual opportunities-some
beneficial and some potentially harmful. Quite often, advantage is being taken of illegal
opportunities as young people commit various offences, become addicted to drugs, and use
violence against their peers.

there are four causes or reasons why teenagers become of juvenile delinquents can be
made such as broken family, lack of communication, lack of finances and lack of social and
moral training. (Alcantara, CJ.R.2019)
first is broken family, where bad family relationship can cause the child to become
violent and make him/her seek attention from other people. Second, lack of communication
can make the child to lose its trust and understanding that will cause him/her to have a lower
self-esteem and self-confidence.

Juvenile Delinquency in Manila, Philippines ( BS Medical Technology) Eventually, he/she will

adopt his/her peers unhealthy lifestyle such as shoplifting and consuming drugs. Next is lack of
finances where they may start to commit crimes such as stealing to improve their economic
conditions. Lastly, lack of social and moral training can lead to poor interaction with other
people and can make them selfish and arrogant without knowing how to respect others and
laws of the state.

This paper attempt to illustrate the causes of juvenile delinquency as perceived by the
Senior High School Student of Kitaotao National High School. In this study the respondents
learned what are the causes of juvenile delinquency, how to minimize misbehavior of the
student inside the school premises. The aim is to recognize the causes of juvenile delinquency
including key definitions and its concepts. However, our study focus the causes of juvenile
delinquency as perceived by the Senior High School Student of Kitaotao National High School.
This in some way became materials for future researchers to be guided in their studies and to
the readers.

from where this study was anchored upon.

Review of related literature and studies

This portion presents the literature and studies both foreign and local that are related and or
relevant to this study.

Donald J. Shoemaker, (2017) Juvenile Delinquency is a timely and comprehensive

introduction to crime, justice, and young people, with an emphasis on theory and practice. The
third edition retains the overall structure of the second edition and features updated
throughout, including new information on gangs and prevention, the impact of race and gender
on crime and justice, additional comparative and international example, and more. The book
opens with an overview of delinquency; historical and contemporary discussions of juvenile
justice; theories of delinquency; institutional contexts of delinquency, such as school and the
family; and chapters on topics such as drug use, youth gangs, female delinquency, police,
courts, and corrections. Many chapters discuss treatment programs as well as delinquency
and illustrate theory put into practice. Most issues are examined through the lenses of race,
class, and gender.
