Statement of Purpose for Petergaye Bailey

From the beginning of my career journey, I have had many wonders regarding what road I should take;
after all, this is a serious life choice which determines how most of my life will go. Searching for a
footing to start on I thought to ask for feedback from the people around me including my parents,
coworkers, musical affiliates, and friends. Though my parents may not have been exposed to the
wonders of all the career choices the world has to offer, they shared observations which they believed
would assist in the choice I would make. They described me as passionate, charismatic, creative,
talented, a calculated risk-taker and supportive. My coworkers shared that I am hardworking,
determined, persistent, organized, resourceful, present, and attentive. And to paint a wholistic picture
my musical affiliates and friends describe me as fun, precise, humorous, caring, helpful, loyal and
optimistic. With the feedback I started my journey on becoming a project manager who would charter
a path for change in every area I focus on, including disaster management.

Pursuing the Master of Business Administration (MBA) - Disaster Management would be the perfect fit
to propelling me further on my career journey as it taps into my elements of planning, providing aid,
management, and organization. Additionally, there is not a single country that can be considered free
from the various types of disasters and there is no doubt that the vulnerabilities of the people in the
developing countries are more than those of their developed counterparts. This can be attributed to
various factors including extensive research and awareness generation activity undertaken by the
governments of these countries. However, this could only be possible in those countries who
understand the long-term effects of disasters on the overall economic development of the country. The
developing countries are realizing more and more that they need to take steps to mitigate the effects
of disasters, but one of the setbacks is the availability of qualified experts. Therefore, I wish to learn
the methods that will be helpful in mitigation and thereby help in reducing the vulnerability of the
people not only in my sweet Jamaica but in other countries as well.

From I was a child, as early as I can remember, I was a compassionate person; always ready to help
people in any possible way. I also used to take initiative in management of various activities especially
at my previous church, if not by direct involvement, then by supporting the organizers. However, I was
not aware that project management and disaster management could go hand in hand. During any
disaster it is essential that the people affected are treated with compassion and their needs are taken
care off, therefore I would help by distributing care packages and provide on-site assistance.
Statement of Purpose for Petergaye Bailey

After seeing what the winds and rains of Tropical Storm Ian did to several areas of Jamaica, I believe
that pursuing this master’s degree will propel me to improve our preparedness as a country by being
better able to foresee, manage and advise about disaster risk management issues we face. I know that
it is essential to have better understanding the different methods of mitigation and reducing the
peoples’ vulnerability and creating awareness about what steps individuals and companies can take to
ensure safety as best as possible. Additionally, I do have an interest in doing post graduate research
with the aim of adding to the body of knowledge since it's a relatively new field, by providing solid
responses to the following questions: what role do institutions play in managing, monitoring, and
mitigating against the impact of natural disasters to reduce the impact of natural disasters specific to
the socio-economic and physical environment? How does the survival of the economy of Jamaica and
the Caribbean depend on a mutual effort of Government, business, and society in confronting the
threats posed by natural and man-made hazards?

Those are just a few of my reasons for pursuing this master’s degree. Last but not least, obtain my
Master of Business Administration (MBA) - Disaster Management from the University of the
Commonwealth University, which is one of the few organizations offering this kind of specialization. A
renounced institution like yours will help me not only by providing me with better knowledge but will
give me a better understanding of steps to reduce suffering that afflicts us.
