INTRODUCTION

Movie is a recording of moving images that tells a story and that people watch in

cinema or television. There are many types of movie such as action, adventure, and

comedies. Movie also known as film tell and teach us and about love, politics and issue

about what happens around us.

For my assignment, I had chosen a film entitled “The Call of the Wild” based on the

book that written by Jack London. Released on 21 February 2020 also it was directed by

Chris Sanders, produced by Erwin Stoff and screen play by Michael Green. This film was

played around 1 hour and 44 minutes. General of this movie is adventure and drama.

Why I choose this movie? Because it’s was easy to related to with what I learnt and

covered all chapters in Interpersonal Communication such as verbal/non-verbal messages,

listening and culture. Also, the story line is easy to understand and I can tell that this movie

is special because it’s can relate to our surrounding.

SYNOPSIS

This movie is about a dog named Buck throughout his journey as a sled dog. He was

a mix of St. Bernard and Scotch Collie. Buck’s story begins at the house of Judge Miller in

Santa Clara, California. Buck was a beloved domesticated pet who was living comfortably.

Unfortunately, Buck was stolen by one of Miller’s gardeners as demand of sled dogs increased.

The gardeners sell Buck to dogs’ trader and makes a profit. Soon Buck was shipped north, at

the ship Buck was abused and beaten as he goes.

Along with a sweet, unassuming dog named Curly, Buck is sold to two government

couriers, François and Perrault, who put him to work as a sled dog. Buck is soon overwhelmed

by his surroundings, particularly when he sees a group of huskies’ attacks and kill Curly. As

Buck is forced to adapt to the wild, his primitive instincts begin to surface. It is during this time

that he makes an enemy of the lead sled dog, Spitz. The two fight a number of times, and

Buck consistently undermines him in the hopes of diminishing his authority. After the final

battle, Buck who wins the battle appoint himself as a new leader and he convince his owner

to follows his stubbornness. With Buck as lead dog, the team begins making trips in record

time. The team, along with Buck, is eventually sold to a mail carrier who forces the dogs to

carry arduously heavy loads.

The team is sold to American gold hunter who wildly inexperience that they overload

the sled and beat the dog unnecessary. They meet an old man, John Thornton who warns

them to not cross the ice because is not safe but one of the Americans disregard him and

attempt to leave. Buck was beaten because he doesn’t want to move, Thornton step in to free

him and Buck was released from the team. They continue without Buck.

After that, Buck become devoted to Thornton as his new master. One day, they went

to journey to search for hidden mine deep in Canadian wilderness. Buck really love Thornton

that he desires growing wild. He became the leader of wolf pack after his master died. Despite

being fully wild now, Buck still returns to the place of Thornton’s death each year to mourn the

loss of his beloved master.

DISCUSSION ON MAIN CHARACTER

i. Culture

• The type of culture that has in buck is collectivist culture. Collectivist culture

defined as member that responsible for entire group and more cooperation,

leadership is shared and rotated. Based on the movie, after Buck became

leader of the team, he knows that as a leader his responsibility is to lead the

team so that they can complete their work as a sled dog of the government

courier.

ii. Perception and Self

• Self-Awareness represents the extent to which you know yourself. For

example, Buck didn’t know about his hidden self until he meets the spirit of

the wild that has been teach and encouraged him to awakened his hidden self

that is, he can do if he tries.

• I would also say that Buck has this self-esteem. As an example, Buck

confident with his strong and big body that he can saved other. That’s why

when the leader of pack wolf falls down into the river, not even a second

thought Buck jump to the nearest rock and pull up the big junk with full

strength to save him from drown. After that, he became companion with the

wolf.

iii. Listening Style

• Emphatic listening defined as to understand what a person means and feels,

listen with some degree of empathy the feelings of another’s feeling. For

example, Buck listen his master John Thornton talking about his son with the

feeling of sadness. He listens carefully and stayed beside him as to comfort

him.

6
iv. Verbal Messages

• This movie contains a verbal message, vary in politeness. For example,

when John Thornton show consideration to the American’s people who was a

gold hunter by giving them advice to not across the river because the spring

will come and the ice will melt so it’s not safe to pass it. But one of the

American’s called Hal avoid the advice and show directness that they didn’t

need his advice with negative facial.

v. Non-verbal Messages

• Non-verbal is communication without words. For example, the spirit of the

wild communicate with Buck by using eyes communication and body gesture

when he encouraged and show Buck the safe route to pass.

7
MORAL VALUE OF THE MOVIE

Based on the movie “The Call of The Wild”, the moral value that I got from this movie

is learn to respect others. Respect is the important things that most of people forget about it.

For example, when John Thornton tell the American’s that their sled is frozen and help them

to break the ice, they don’t even thank him after he help them. Other than that, they don’t

even show respect to John Thornton as the youngest people and acting very rude to him.

Next, we need to help others. As an example, based on the movie when Buck

rescue the leader of pack wolf from drowning. Even though they are different type of living

species, Buck didn’t hesitate jumping toward the rock at the fast water river to save him.

Another example is when Buck save Francoise from the water after the ice that she stands

broke.

Last but not least, be grateful of what we have. For example, after the long journey

Buck and John Thornton final found the hidden mine and after that John Thornton begin to

slowly collect the gold that he found at the river everyday but when he about to leave, he

only took a small amount of the gold that he has collected with him and throw the other gold

back into the river.

SUGGESTION/COMMENTS

This was a best movie ever that I have watched in this year. I would recommend it

for other to watch it because they are so many things that we can learn and take an example

for our daily life. What the things that make me feelings like this is the courage, feelings, and

others that Buck have. I have watched this movie twice and even crying when I watch it. I

really touched how Buck love his master very well even after his master died, he will always

remember him every time he passes at the place also the grave of his master. Furthermore,

from this movie I learn that even animals have feeling like human so when I saw the scene

that Buck and team was beaten, I have feeling that if they are human, they have been crying

and begging to not beat them. I would like to give this movie and Jack London thanks for

make an interesting story that have so much meaning on it.
