YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Stained Glass Window

You are designing a stained glass window. Which division for circle B did you choose?

Circle one option:

Option 1: Thirds Option 2: Fourths Option 3: Sixths

The window pane measures 24 in. on each side. The big circle
is 20 in. in diameter, and the little circle B is 8 in. in diameter.

How much of each type of glass I need, and how much the
glass is going to cost.

A positive number in square inches for the amount of glass,

and a positive number in dollars for the cost.

Here is a picture of the square pane and the circles inside. (Note: Picture is not drawn to scale.)
1. What is the area of the square? (1 point)

The square pane is 24 inches on each side. Its area is 24∗24=576 i n2.

2. What is the approximate area of circle A? (1 point)

Circle A has a diameter of 20 inches or a radius of 10 inches.

Area = π∗r 2∗π∗1 02=π∗100 ≈ 314.16i n2

3. What is the approximate area of circle B? (1 point)

Circle B has a diameter of 8 inches, or a radius of 4 inches.

Area = π∗r 2=π∗42=π∗16 ≈ 50.26 in2 .

4. What is the approximate area of the shaded region 1 (between the square and circle A)? (2

points)

Area of region 1 = area of square - area of circle A

2
A=576−314.16=261.84 i n .
5. Does the area of shaded region 1 change size if you move circle A to a different position

inside the square? (1 point)

No.

6. What is the approximate area of shaded region 2 (between circles A and B)? (2 points)

Area of region 2 = area of circle A - area of circle B

A=314.16−50.26=263.90 i n 2.

Consider the segmented circle B that you chose.

7. What is the interior angle of each sector inside your circle B? (1 point)

Since I cut into 3 equal sections, then each section has an interior angle measuring 360/3 =
120°.

8. What is the approximate area of each sector in your circle B? (2 points)

Area sector = (m/360 ¿∗π∗r 2=(120/360)∗π∗42 =(1/ 3)16 π ≈ 16.75i n2.

Solving the Problem:

Suppose the costs for your glass are as follows:

● Region 1 (the area between the square and circle A): $0.10 per square inch
● Region 2 (the area between circle A and circle B): $0.15 per square inch
● Sectors for circle B: One sector will be made from expensive glass that is $0.80 per
square inch. The rest of the sectors will be from glass that is $0.20 per square inch.

9. How much does the glass for region 1 cost? (1 point)

Total cost for region 1 = (cost per square inch)(area of region 1)

¿( $ 0.10)(261.84)=$ 26.18

10. How much does the glass for region 2 cost? (1 point)

Total cost for region 2 = (cost per square inch)(area of region 2)

¿( $ 0.15)(263.90)=$ 39.59
11. What is the total cost for the glass for the sectors in circle B? (2 points)

Cost of first sector = (cost per square inch)(area of sector)

¿( $ 0.80)(16.75)=$ 13.40
Cost of other two sectors = 2(cost per square inch)(area of sector)
¿ 2($ 0.20)(16.75i n2 )=$ 6.70
Total cost of all 3 sectors = $ 13.40+$ 6.70=$ 20.10

12. What is the total cost of the glass for your window? (1 point)

Total cost = cost for region 1 + cost for region 2 + cost for circle B

¿ $ 26.18+$ 39.59+ $ 20.10=$ 85.87

13. You have only $100 to spend on glass supplies. Do you have enough money to buy your

glass? (1 point)

Yes, with $14.13 left.
