INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this research is to enlighten everyone about the negative impacts of using computers or
any other electronic devices for prolonged periods of time. With the pandemic, and everything being
done online, there has been a downfall on the health and social life of students.

TASK

Due to the current pandemic virtual classrooms are being used to temporarily replace physical ones. As
a result, computers are being used for a prolonged period. As the president of the Students’ Council
body, you are asked to conduct a research on the effects of this to sensitize the students at your school
about the negative impact on human’s health and social life. You may add any other information you
deem necessary.
Your task is to obtain and summarize the information, prepare it for dissemination via e-mail, and state
all sources in an appropriate bibliography.

Article 1

What is COVID-19 and the effects of it?

COVID-19 also known as CORONAVIRUS is a disease that can cause respiratory illness in humans. It
originated from animals. Scientists give the virus its name due to the fact of the crown-like spikes on the
virus surface. This disease may look like it isn’t dangerous but it can be deadly and it’s contagious. It
has claimed the lives of millions of people worldwide, it even caused a worldwide shutdown. When
someone has contracted the disease these are some of the symptoms they will receive: fever or chills,
cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, tiredness, muscle or body aches and loss of taste or
smell.

Some effects that can cause as a result of prolonged use of computers on students
that are doing online classes.

1. Carpal Tunnel Syndromes

Carpal tunnel is an opening that runs from your forearm to your wrist, containing the nerve that controls
your thumb and first three fingers. And when someone moves their wrist in the same motion over and
over using a computer it will cause their wrist to swell and that will put pres-sure on the carpel tunnel,
this how a person can get the “carpal tunnel syndrome”.
As students they have to be on their computer for 8hours a day due to the pandemic and even more
hours if they have homework and this can cause a major health risk.

2. Strained Vision

Strain of vision is caused when someone is on their computer or any device with a screen for an excess
amount of hours around the clock without sleep and your eyes will get tired but the person doesn’t want
to go to rest and this will cause your eyes to strain. Persons who strain their eyes may experience dry
eye, blurred vision, double vision, fatigue and headache.

3. Chronic Neck and Back Pain

Chronic neck and back pain can be cause by bad posture, spending long period of time on computers
and cellphones and even a bad desk chair. Individuals would most likely hunch over, looking down at
the device instead of holding it up to eye level, which is the cause of chronic neck and back pain.
