 What are the main claims presented in the paragraphs?

Crissie Hontanosas's post is focused on the issue of whether or not using paper bags is more
beneficial to our environment. According to the claims stated in this article, the usage of reusable
shopping bags has environmental benefits as well as drawbacks, regardless of whether the bags
are made of paper or plastic. Plastics, including plastic bags, are causing clogs in our drains and
threatening marine life as they are carried by the currents out to sea. However, the environmental
impact of one billion paper bags is considerably more severe. One of the most effective and
convenient methods is to completely forego the use of garbage bags.

 How are these supported?

This claim was personally supported by the author of the article. And that is due to the fact that
she attended Harvard to study Environmental Management and Sustainability. She has conducted
extensive research about the use of plastic bags and paper bags. Simply carrying out an
observation may provide more evidence in support of the allegations. The results would very
probably convince you to abandon the use of paper bags and plastic bags altogether.

 What pieces of evidence are used to support the claims?

Since the author of this article is a researcher, she conducted study on any and all subtopics that
could be relevant to the main topic. In a pioneering study that was carried out in 1990 by
Franklin Associates, the researchers came to the conclusion that the emissions caused by the
production of paper bags were about three times higher than those caused by plastic bags. This
was subsequently supported by two further investigations in 2004 and 2007, all of which came to
the same conclusion: paper bags contribute two to three times more to the acceleration of global
warming than plastic bags do. She drew the conclusion that the production of paper requires a
significant amount of more water, a resource that is dwindling in supply. The data on water
pollution and solid waste also support the use of plastic bags. Which means this article claims
that both paper bags and plastic bags are not good for the environment.
