QUIZ #3: INVERSE VARIATION

I. Write an equation of direct variation for each situation.

1. The cost per person (c) of hiring a taxicab varies inversely as the number of persons (N) sharing
the cost.

2. The fraction of pizza per person (F) varies inversely as the number of persons (N) sharing the
pizza.

3. The volume (V) of a gas varies inversely as the pressure (P) upon it.

4. The time (t) required to empty a tank varies inversely as the rate (r) of pumping.

II. Underline the two quantities in each situation. Tell whether they are directly or inversely
related.
1. The number of days a tank of water last is related to the number of people in the household.

2. The water bill is related to the number of cubic meters of water consumed.

3. Water pressure on the ears of a diver is related to the depth of the water.

4. The age of antique furniture is related to the price it can fetch in the market.

5. The number of steps you need to take to walk 20 meters depends on the length of your steps.

6. The amount of remaining ink in a pen is related to the number of hours it has been used.

III. Find the constant of variation and equation of variation in which y varies inversely as x , and solve
for the value of y .

1. When x=2, y= . Find y when x= .

2. When x= , y=6. Find y when x=10.

3. When x=0.1, y=0.5. Find y when x=10

4. When x=0.1, y=0.5. Find y when x=10

IV. PROBLEM-SOLVING: Solve the following problems following the steps you have learned.

1. A group of boy scouts is allowed a fixed tent area. The length of the rectangular area is
inversely proportional to its width. An area has a width of 4 meters and a length of 6 meters. It
its length is increased by 3 meters; find the width it must have to maintain the same area.

2. The length of time a bag of dog food lasts varies inversely with the number of dogs. If a bag of
dog food will feed 3 dogs for 10 days, how long will it feed 10 dogs?

3. The number of minutes that it takes for an ice cube to melt varies inversely as the temperature
of the water the ice cube is placed in. When the ice cube is placed in 16 ° C water, it takes 2.3
minutes to melt. How long would it take for this size of ice cubes to melt if it were placed in 24° C
water?

4. According to Boyle’s Law, when the temperature is held constant the volume of a gas varies
inversely with the pressure on the gas. If the gas occupies 36 cm 3 under a pressure of 10
atmospheres, find the volume when the pressure is changed to 8 atmospheres.
