VIBRATION ENGINEERING PROBLEM SET

1) Compute the angular deflection of a shaft having a diameter of 4 and 5/8 inches, length of 60
in. and a torque of 350.14 ft-lb that transmits 12 hp at 180 rpm. Use G = 11 x 106 psi.
Given: N = 180 rpm
Ds = 4 5/8 in G = 11.5 x 106 psi
L = 60 in
Required:
T = 350.14 ft-lb
θ=?
P = 12 hp

 From the angular deflection equation:

𝑇𝐿 𝜋
𝜃= , 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐽𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑑 = (𝐷 )4
𝐽𝐺 32 𝑠
 By direct substitution and evaluation of units:

12 𝑖𝑛
(350.14 𝑓𝑡 − 𝑙𝑏 × ) (60 𝑖𝑛)
1 𝑓𝑡
𝜃=
𝜋 5 4 𝑙𝑏
(32 (4 8) ) (11.5 × 106 2 )
𝑖𝑛

𝜃 = 4.88 × 10−4 𝑟𝑎𝑑 𝑜𝑟 0.028°

2.) The period of oscillation of a simple pendulum is 1.2 s in a place where g = 9.8 m/s2. How long
is the bob below the rigid point?
Given:
T = 1.2 s
g = 9.8 m/s2
Required:
L=?

 From period of a simple pendulum equation:

𝐿
𝑇 = 2𝜋√
𝑔

 Evaluating to isolate L out of the equation:

𝑇 2 𝑔 (1.2) 𝑠 (9.8 𝑠 2 )
𝐿= = = 0.36 𝑚

3.) A clock pendulum of period one second has given a correct time when the length of the
pendulum is 0.36 m. If the length of the pendulum is increased by 0.13 m, how much time will
the clock lose in 24 hours? g = 9.8 m/s2
Given:
L1 = 0.36 m
L2 = 0.36 m + 0.13 m = 0.49 m
tevaluation = 24 hrs
g = 9.8 m/s2
Required:
tdelay/lose = ?

 From period of a simple pendulum equation:

𝐿
𝑇 = 2𝜋√
𝑔

 Since we need to find the delay or the time lost within 24 hrs when the length is
increased, we need to evaluate L1 and L2.

𝐿1 0.36 𝑚
𝑇1 = 2𝜋√ = 2𝜋√ 𝑚 = 1.204 𝑠
𝑔 9.8 2
𝑠

𝐿2 0.49 𝑚
𝑇2 = 2𝜋√ = 2𝜋√ 𝑚 = 1.404 𝑠
𝑔 9.8 2
𝑠
 The delay between the two period:
𝑇𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑦 = 𝑇2 − 𝑇1 = 1.404 𝑠 − 1.204 𝑠 = 0.201 𝑠

 Percentage of delay/change:
𝑇𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑦 0.201 𝑠
%𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑦 = = = 0.1669 𝑜𝑟 16.69%
𝑇1 1.204 𝑠
 Therefore, the delay in 24 hrs:
𝑇𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑦 𝑖𝑛 24 ℎ𝑟𝑠 = %𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑦 (24 ℎ𝑟𝑠) = 0.1669(24 ℎ𝑟𝑠) = 4.01 ℎ𝑟𝑠

4.) In SAE 1030 steel 2 in diameter solid shaft with a deflection not to exceed 0.06 degree/ft
length. Modulus of rigidity is 12,000,000 psi. Determine the power transmitted if the shaft
rotates at 280 rpm.
Given:
Ds = 2 in
θ/L = 0.06 degree/ft
N = 280 rpm
G = 12 x 106 psi
Required:
P=?

 From the angular deflection equation:

𝑇𝐿 𝜋
𝜃= , 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐽𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑑 = (𝐷 )4
𝐽𝐺 32 𝑠
𝜃 𝑇
= 𝜋
𝐿 ( (𝐷 )4 ) (𝐺)

𝜃 𝜋
𝑇 = ( ) ( (𝐷𝑠 )4 ) (𝐺)

1 𝑓𝑡
𝑇 = 1644.93 𝑖𝑛 − 𝑙𝑏 ( ) = 137.08 𝑓𝑡 − 𝑙𝑏

 From shaft power equation:
𝑓𝑡 − 𝑙𝑏 1 ℎ𝑝
𝑃 = 2𝜋𝑇𝑁 = 2𝜋(137.08 𝑓𝑡 − 𝑙𝑏)(280 𝑟𝑝𝑚 ) = 241,163.73 × = 7.31 ℎ𝑝
