Problem:
A flywheel slows from 350rpm to 210rpm in 5.88 seconds. How many revolutions occur
during this time?

Given:
1𝑟ⅇ𝑣 2𝜋 1𝑚𝑖𝑛 35 𝑟𝑎𝑑
𝜔0 = 350 (1 𝑚𝑖𝑛) (𝑟ⅇ𝑣) (60𝑠ⅇ𝑐)= 𝜋
3 𝑠ⅇ𝑐

1𝑟ⅇ𝑣 2𝜋 1𝑚𝑖𝑛 𝑟𝑎𝑑

𝜔𝑓 = 210 (1𝑚𝑖𝑛) (1𝑟ⅇ𝑣) (60𝑠ⅇ𝑐𝑠)= 7𝜋 𝑠ⅇ𝑐

𝑡 = 5.88𝑠𝑒𝑐

Solution:
From: 𝜔𝑓 = 𝜔0 + 𝛼𝑡
𝑟𝑎𝑑 35 𝑟𝑎𝑑
7𝜋 =( 𝜋 ) + 𝛼(5.88𝑠𝑒𝑐 )
𝑠𝑒𝑐 3 𝑠𝑒𝑐
𝛼 = −2.493

When the angular velocity of a 4 𝑓𝑡 diameter pulley is 3 , the total acceleration of a point on its
𝑠
rim is 30 𝑓𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐 2 . Determine the angular acceleration of the pulley at this instant.

Given:
d = 4 𝑓𝑡
𝜔 = 3 𝑟𝑎𝑑 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐

𝑎 = 30 𝑓𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐 2

Solution:
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑟𝜔2

𝑎𝑛 = (2)(3)2

𝑎𝑛 = 18 𝑓𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐 2

𝑎 2 = 𝑎𝑛 2 + 𝑎𝑡 2

𝑎 2 − 𝑎𝑛 2 = 𝑎𝑡 2

𝑎𝑡 = √ 𝑎 2 − 𝑎𝑛 2

𝑎𝑡 = √(30)2 − (18)2

PROBLEM 2:
A POWERFUL MOTORCYCLE CAN ACCELERATE FROM 0 TO 30.0 m/s (ABOUT 108 km/h)
IN 4.20 s. WHAT IS THE ANGULAR ACCELERATION OF ITS 0.320-m RADIUS WHEELS?

SOLUTION
Given:
∆v=30 m/s; ∆t=4.20s; r=0.320m
α=α_t/r

Solving for α_t

α_t=∆v/∆t
α_t=(30 m/s)/4.20s
∴α_t=7.14 m/s^2
Solving for α

α=α_t/r
α=(7.14 m/s^2 )/0.320m
α=22.3 rad/s^2 ANSWER
