AIR DISTRIBUTION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. Description
(See Figure 1 and Figure 2.)

A. Variable-opening-type vents and a foot-warmer diffuser distribute conditioned air in the cockpit.
(1) The vents are pairs of shoulder- and ankle-height outlets, symmetrically located on the pilot's and
copilot's side of the cockpit. They are used to control both the direction and volume of airflow. The
ankle-height outlets provide conditioned air for the outboard foot of each crew member.
(2) The foot-warmer diffuser is wrapped around the back of the control pedestal. Vents on the sides
direct air toward the inboard foot of each crew member.
(3) On Aircraft 60-067 and Subsequent, two additional variable-opening-type vents, located behind
the copilot seat, provides additional conditioned air to the crew.

B. Two overhead and two floor diffuser assemblies distribute conditioned air in the cabin.
(1) The overhead diffusers, one on each side of the cabin, carry most of the cabin airflow.
(2) The floor diffusers, one on each side of the cabin, carry the balance of the cabin airflow.

C. A cockpit blower (B28) is used to provide supplemental air to the cockpit and cabin, if desired. The
blower, located below the cockpit floorboards between frames 10 and 11, LBL 11 and 19, forces air
through a gasper assembly above each crew and passenger seat. Airflow direction is variable but the
airflow cannot be shut off if the blower is on. Volume of airflow can be controlled with the cockpit
blower switch.

D. A cabin blower (B23), mounted above the cabin baggage compartment, is used to supply
supplemental air to the cabin, if desired. The blower forces air through the distribution ducts located on
each side of the cabin above the windows. The blowers may be used in conjunction with auxiliary
heating (21-40-00) and the freon cooling (21-50-00) systems. Volume of airflow can be controlled with
the cabin blower switch.

E. A cockpit air check valve and two cabin air check valves are located in the cockpit air duct and cabin
air ducts immediately forward of the aft pressure bulkhead. The check valves prevent air from flowing
aft to the tailcone should the aircraft loose bleed air.

F. On Aircraft 60-001 thru 60-051 modified per SB 60-21-6, "Reduce Cabin and Cockpit Bleed Air and
Diffuser Noise" and 60-052 and Subsequent, two muffler assemblies are installed upstream of the
cabin floor diffusers. The mufflers provide reduced cabin diffuser system noise.

2. Operation
(See Figure 1 and Figure 2.)

A. Modulated engine bleed air is transferred through ducts to the heat exchanger. In flight, the bleed air is
cooled in the heat exchanger by ram air which enters the dorsal inlet, passes through the heat
exchanger, and then dumps overboard.

B. Conditioned air is supplied to the cockpit through a check valve and duct on the RH side under the
cabin floorboards. The air is exhausted into the cockpit through the side window diffusers, foot warmer
diffusers, and the variable-opening outlets located on each side of the cockpit. On Aircraft 60-067 and
Subsequent, a short duct runs directly from the evaporator to the plenum and variable-opening outlets
behind the copilot seat.

C. Conditioned air is supplied to the cabin through two check valves and ducts, one on each side of the
aircraft. The air is exhausted into the cabin through the two overhead diffusers and two floor diffusers.
The air being exhausted from the overhead diffusers will have been forced through the cabin
evaporator. Flapper doors located in front of the cabin blower (B23) prevent conditioned air from
blowing back through the blowers. Should additional air conditioning be desired, the freon cooling
system may be energized to cool the air.

D. When bleed air is not being supplied by the engines, the cabin blower (B23) may be used to recirculate
cabin air across the auxiliary cabin heaters (HR10 and HR11) and the cabin evaporators for heating or
cooling. The cabin blower forces air past the flapper doors since conditioned air is not being supplied
to the evaporator.

E. The cockpit blower (B28) may be used to recirculate cockpit air through the cockpit heater (HR5) to
provide crew heating or used in conjunction with the cockpit evaporator to provide cool air to the
cockpit and cabin gasper assemblies.

F. Cabin air exchange rates are given below. (See Table 1.)
