THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

Facebook has attracted considerable attention among researchers as it

offers an online platform on which users create profiles, generate and share

contents and information as well as interact with other known and unknown

contacts. According to Inside Facebook Gold (2011), Facebook has experienced

vast expansion in recent years with its 661.3 million users representing annual

growth of 45.2%. Its business value has also surged to US$50 billion after an

investment by Goldman Sachs in early 2011. (Rouis et al, 2011).

There are several identified entry points that can provide an easy access

to the social networking sites or social media applications such as iPad, tablets,

desktops, laptops, and smartphones as identified by Badri, etal (2017). Facebook

is undeniably one of the social networking sites which attracted millions of users

all over the world, particularly young people. As stated by Kirschner & Karpinski

(2010), it also has attracted a number of adults with users aged 24-34 with an

increase of 181% and those who are in their 35 years with a 98% increase.

Nevertheless, the prevalence of Facebook usage remains higher among college

students and young adult. Students have found Facebook to be an effective tool

in updating themselves with various curricular and extra-curricular activities

amidst their training for collaboration and information sourcing. Facebook has

also entered the educational system, in time, as teachers begin utilizing its
2

increased accessibility to reach their students for the purpose of school

announcements and assignments (Carreon, et al 2019).

Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) reasoned out that college students spent a

considerable amount of time using the website that it may already have an

impact on their daily activities. Their study reported that 46% of their sample

used it for making assignments while 36% used it for sending instant

communication through chat or email, and 38% for computer gaming usage.

This platform, as agreed by many Facebook users, has been very useful as an

instrument for interacting among people from the various parts of the world and

serves as a primary podium for communication for people from the different

walks of life.

There are existing research studies pertaining to the relationship between

social media usage and academic performance of students. The evolution of

technology and change is inevitable, as for instance, the real value of personal

life interaction is now taken aside because of the use of social networking sites.

Along with many social networking sites, people, especially the students, are

attracted or tempted to chat with their friends or to surf the Internet instead of

doing their homework or reading their notes. Many students are addicted to the

Internet and spent long hours in social networking sites. (Abrenica etal, n.d.)

Despite the numerous advantages brought about by these social networking

sites in the sector of education nowadays, the fact remains that spending too much time

on these platforms especially Facebook may have an impact to the academic

3

performance of the students. Hence, the conduct of this study aims to find out the

effects of Facebook to the academic performance of the senior high school students.

Statement of the Problem

This study will determine the effects of Facebook to the academic

performance of the senior high school students.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following:

1. What is the profile of the senior high school students in terms of:

a. age;

b. gender;

c. grade level;

d. general weighted average in the last school year; and

e. socio-economic status?

2. What are the effects of Facebook to the academic performance of the

senior high school students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the senior high

school and the effects of Facebook to their academic performance?

Null Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested with the data resultant of this

study.

1. There is no significant relationship between the profile of the senior high

school and the effects of Facebook to their academic performance.

4

Scope and Delimitation

The study will be conducted to find out the effects of Facebook to the academic

performance of the senior high school students who are currently enrolled in this school

year 2021-2022 at Bani East Integrated School in Bani, Pangasinan.

It will be delimited to the profile of the senior high school students

including their academic performance in the previous school year and the effects

of Facebook to their academic performance. It will also look into the relationship

between the profile of the senior high school students and the effects of

Facebook to their academic performance.

Significance of the Study

The research output is considered deemed important for the following

reasons:

Senior High School Students. This study will benefit the students in

terms of providing awareness on the effects of social media applications to their

academic performance.

Secondary School Teachers. This study could help educators in
