Overview and Aims


The overall purpose of the programme is to provide knowledge and understanding of the role of performance
management in supporting organisational objectives, the core concepts and processes of performance
management and the approaches adopted in different organisational contexts.

It specifically aims to:

Develop an understanding of the strategic nature of performance management and its contribution to high
performance working and organisational performance.

Critically examine the theoretical concepts which inform performance management and the extent of any gap
between theory and practice through an examination of the issues that can arise in its application.

Evaluate the different approaches to managing performance management, their effectiveness in different
workplace contexts and the impact of the business environment.

Appreciate the principles and practice of aligning corporate and individual and/or team objectives to achieve
desired organisational outcomes through processes of individual performance review, development and
reward.
Explore the respective roles and responsibilities of senior and line management in the development and
application of performance management processes.
