How does Earthing Curb the Risks of Lightning?

"Lightning kills 76 people who were taking selfies in India."

"100 succumb to lightning in North India."

Since the monsoon began, Indians has been waking up to news like these in 2021, however, lethal
lightning strikes are common in the vast Asian nation due to the summer heat causing deluge during
the June-September.

Even though the reason for strikes is clear, the severity of the situation creates a dire need for
measures to adopt and ensure that not only our expensive electrical devices are safe but so are our
lives.

Lightning Strikes Monumental Damage and Life Loss

While thousands have been killed through lightning, 2021’s news alerts showcased lightning striking
the medieval watchtower at a fortification of the famous 12th-century Amer Fort. With Rajasthan,
Gujarat’s Dwarkadhish temple also survived a hit. However, UNESCO World Heritage Site,
Chittorgarh Fort faced destruction as 40 kg stone broke off after a bolt hit the Kirti Stambh of the
12th-century structure.

The complaints emerged that addressed lack of the authorities to protect the monuments from
lightning strikes by taking steps towards installing simple devices such as lightning rods and
arresters.

In the quest to save our lives through measures against lightning strikes, earthing turns out to be a
key solution.

Different Types of Lightening

Contrary to the popular belief, lightning can be of various types. Here's a brief insight into different
types of lightning that hits the earth:

 Direct: Well, it is as dangerous as it sounds as it can damage any object or human which
comes in its range. A direct strike can result in internal burns, organ damage, explosions of
flesh and bone, and nervous system damage. While death is a possible outcome for humans
and animals, contact injury, side splash, blast injury are common results of the same.
 Indirect: Even though the strike hits the ground, it may affect a human or an electrical device
not indirectly as it may find a better conductor than the ground. From a person's legs to
electrical wires, it can be quite dangerous. The indirect lightning strike may cause more
injuries, deaths, and Hallucinations that may be induced 200 meters of a severe lightning
storm.
 Secondary or resultant lightning strike: Explosions, fires, and accidents caused eventually
after the lightning strike can be the cases.

Earthing, An Important Pillar

Damage is inevitable when lightning strikes on earth. However, earthing, and lightning protection is
the key to unlock safety at the disposal of the hands of every individual. A current shock protection
strategy is built on three pillars of Earthing, Lightning Arrestor, SPD or Surge Protection Device.
Simply put, earthing transfers the immediate discharge of the electrical energy directly to the earth
that allows protection to everyone and every piece of equipment on the floor.

However, some may argue that earthing can harm nature in one way or another. While charcoal is
needed in conventional earthing, regular water fill-ups are required for chemical earthing. This
implies the need for a sustainable earthing solution.

Decode Sustainable Marconite Earthing

This 34% rise, between the 13.8 million lightning strikes in March 2021, and 18.5 million lightning
strikes in April 2020, in India, is a result of climate change, experts stated.

The number and frequency of lightning strikes have increased across the globe. This trend indicates
the need for protection solutions but a green and sustainable one as well.

Since Marconite is specially manufactured for electrical earthing, it is not only safer but also
sustainable and a green earthing solution. It is indeed a solution that solves two crucial problems
ahead of mankind.
