SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC
SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE & THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Practical No.: 03

Assignment: Total Station Traverse Practical

Aim: To carry out a closed traverse survey of an area based on points assigned
to each group.

Equipment:
1) Total station;
2) Reflectors/ Prisms;
3) Tripods;

Procedure:
1) Familiarise with the following: -
a) Setting up/ levelling of a Total Station;
b) Reading and recording of observations into a Traverse Form.
2) Based on a given datum from Table 1, locate the stations assigned and
establish a closed traverse comprising of 4 stations shown in Figure 1;
3) Observed the direction using Face Left (FL) / Circle Left (CL) reading
between points. Additionally, the horizontal distance and height
difference between points;
4) Record your observations on the Traverse Form.

Computations:
1) Computation of Linear Misclose and Precision;
2) Adjustment of Linear Misclose by Bowditch Method;
3) Calculation of Co-ordinates of the traverse stations.

Plotting:
1) Using the computed co-ordinates, plot the traverse to a suitable scale
using a CAD software or graph paper;
2) Bearing and distance between two traverse stations should be shown.
Bearing in Degree (°), Minutes (’) and Seconds (”). Distance in metres
to 3 decimal places;
3) Tabulate coordinates of each traverse station and scale must be shown;
4) A title block should include: Location, Title, Group number, Class and
Admission number. In addition, the north point shown on top of the
sketch.

Submission:
1) Original field notes, Computation Forms
2) Answers to the questionnaire attached;
3) The plot of the closed traverse with suitable scale, indicating the computed
coordinates, distances and bearings;
4) Present the above in a Report* format;
5) Each individual member is to submit a Personal Reflection Write-Up
attached to the group report.
