LET’S TALK ABOUT DISTINCTION
I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency
MELC 4a. Compare and contrast the content of the materials viewed with
outside sources of information in terms of accessibility and effectiveness
B. Objective/s
1. Be familiar with the different graphic organizers used in comparison and
contrast
2. Use appropriate graphic organizer to compare and contrast

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

With the availability and accessibility of different texts just about a single topic, it is
important that as a 21st century learner, he must be able to practice comparative thinking by
comparing and contrasting ideas found in multiple sources. You must be equipped with the
necessary skill to identify conflicting and consisting information, and critically evaluate the
sources. When you compare and contrast information presented to you, you can make
inferences and draw conclusions.
In comparing and contrasting the contents of the materials viewed or read, using
graphic organizers is a helpful and effective way in organizing information. Graphic organizers
are visual representations of relationships between facts, concepts, or ideas. It can guide you
as you fill in and build upon a graphical “map” or diagram of your thoughts. Using graphic
organizer as a tool to compare and contrast ideas, facts, and concepts has these four key
benefits:
1. Provides simple structure.
Graphic organizers help learners think through and organize their thoughts
as they compare and contrast.
2. Increased comprehension.
By adding their visual element, graphic organizers make abstract ideas
more concrete, and can also reduce any confusion between related
concepts.
3. Develops higher-order thinking skills (HOTS).
Going beyond content memorization or repeating it back, compare and
contrasting with graphic organizers serves as a stepping stone to higher
level of thinking-helping the learners make connections and structure their
thinking.
4. Strengthens retention.

1
By focusing on learning thinking on just two ideas, learner’s ability to remember
key content is improved.

Practice Task 2
Read the paragraph below then use a graphic organizer to show the similarities and
differences.
Basketball and Soccer
Basketball was born in 1891 by James Naismith who was a professor of physical
education. Soccer was born in 1863, by people in England. Both are really fun sports that are
played around the world. These two sports require teamwork. Both are enjoyed by people of
different genders, readily understandable. Basketball is a sport that is played with two teams
of 5 players for each team on the court at the same time, and each player has his position that
needs to protect from the opponent so that they cannot score. In soccer, there are eleven
players per team. One goalkeeper and there are ten outfielder players. Each team has seven
substitute players on the sideline. But each team is allowing to have three substitutions per
game. The position in basketball is: Point guard, shooting the guard, small forward, power
forward, center and each player need to focus in his position. Also, the position in Soccer are
Attackers (3 players), midfielders (3 players), defender (4 players), goalkeeper (1 player); also,
they need to focus in his positions so that when they are playing, they can to protect his
position.

Practice Task 3
Choose one of your friends then talk about your life experiences on home quarantine
while the country is facing COVID 19 pandemic. Identify the similarities and differences of your
ideas then show it by using a Venn diagram.

B. ASSESSMENT
Read the text below then make a graphic organizer to visually display the similarities
and differences of Dolphins and Sharks.
Dolphins and Sharks
Like dolphins, sharks are amazing animals. Dolphins use echolocation, which is like radar. They
make clicking sounds in the water that bounce off nearby objects in order to determine how far away
objects are. Sharks, too, are quite fascinating. They have existed since before the dinosaurs and have
over 3,000 teeth in five rows. Dolphins and sharks are similar in many ways. Both live in warm and cold
oceans all over the world. They have fins, come in many sizes and colors, and both eat fish and squid.
Neither animal chews its food—they gulp it whole! In fact, large dolphins (called killer whales) even eat
other dolphins and sharks. Dolphins and sharks are also very different. Dolphins are as clever as
chimpanzees or dogs; however, sharks are only about as smart as birds or rats. Like most mammals,
dolphins are warm-blooded, have bones, nurse their young, sleep, and breathe air. Unlike dolphins,
sharks are cold-blooded, boneless fish. Although sharks don’t sleep like dolphins do, they have active
and inactive periods. Contrary to what many people think, sharks don’t often attack humans. When they
do, it’s because they mistake us for their favorite food—seals, rays and sea lions. Dolphins are smart,
playful mammals. On the other hand, sharks are exciting fish with a lot of frightening teeth. Although
both animals are amazing, I’d rather meet a dolphin in the ocean than a shark!
