 Scheduling of Staff and Staff management:

There are thousands number of Chikankari Artisans comprising 95% of female

artisans and only 5% of male. The sector remains unorganised with no medical
insurance, social and financial security. The artisans are not helped in skill up-
gradation and there are not teach how to market their hand made products.

Most of them work from home and after completion of the Chikankari products,
they used to give that to the centre which pays a very less monthly wage starting
from Rs. 750 for beginners up to Rs. 2500 to skilled person. And some of them
works from the centre and same wage is provided to them too. The artisans
working in Centres faced many problems at the work place such as inadequate
space and unpleasant environment.

Mainly women from age of 18-28 are choosen for work as quality and quantity
work is given by them. The womens used to be at home only, so they can work for
longer duration. Many womens used to work at Centre for 7-8 hours of continuous
work with half an hour break for lunch and then they also make Chikankari
products from their home too. And womens of age 38-48 are chosen very less like
15-16% only because they start facing eyeseight problem and other health related
issue.

The Artisans (staffs) are choosen on basics of:

o Skilled Artisans - These skilled artisans has fine works and know most of
the stitches. They are expert in Murri stitches, Jali work and Katao. They are
paid higher salary (rs. 2000-2500) comparative to the other.
o Semi skilled Artisans- These have hands on simple and common stitches
like Bakhia, Dhoom, Tepchi, Canzeera and etc. they are paid from Rs.1500-
Rs.2000 monthly.
o Unskilled artisans – These artisans are just the beginners using only Bakhia
stitches and they are paid only Rs.750 wage per month.
o Age factors – This category compromise of below age of 18, age from 18-
38, and 38-48 age. Only 4-5% of age 18 are kept at place. The major age
group is 18-38, because they provide the best quality and quantity of work.
And the third is 38-48 of about 15% only because they start facing health
issue and eye-seight problems.
The centres consist of managing staff who looks after the Artisans, making
Chikankari clothes. Their main work is to manage and handle the place, where
the Artisans are the key persons behind the hand made Chikankari’s.
Creating a staff schedule is not a simple task. While creating a schedule, we
need to consider a lot.

What staff members are available/unavailable ?

Which staff members are qualified for the tasks I need done?

Am I creating avoidable overtime?

How many shifts do I need to meet demand?
