LESSON 1 Hand Massage Module No. 6

Our hands are one of the most over used parts in our body. From doing simple
tasks up to accomplishing a complex work, we always used our hands. That is why,
our hands need attention and care after a long day of work.

Hand massage can be a quick way to relieve stress and tension. According to
some studies, having a hand massage once a day may help reduce the pain
associated with arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and neuropathy.

Moreover, now that we are in the middle of this pandemic, one way to better
our moods, to lessen our anxiety and to improve our sleep is by doing a hand massage
(PubMed Central, 2011).

In this lesson, we will be learning the process on how to give a hand massage.
Applying hand massage with our loved ones will surely enable us to help them in
reducing their stress levels in this trying time and in making them feel more relaxed
and refreshed from too much work.

Definition of Terms:

Acupressure – is the application of manual pressure (as with the thumbs or

fingertips) to specific points on the body.
Carpal tunnel Syndrome – causes pain, numbness and weakness in the wrist

Hand Massage – is a form of reflexology and the manipulation of tissues with the hand
or an instrument for therapeutic purposes.

Limber – able to bend and to move easily and smoothly

Neuropathy - a nerve damage that can cause pain in your hands and feet. It can also
cause numbness, tingling, and other abnormal sensations.

6
LESSON 1 Hand Massage Module No. 6

Reflexology - a system of massage used to relieve tension and treat illness, based
on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet, hands, and head linked to every
part of the body.

BASIC HAND MASSAGE TECHNIQUES

Based on the DepEd Learning Material in Beauty Care, it would be better if

before we give a hand spa treatment, we have a prior knowledge on the basic hand
massage. This will give a more satisfying and beneficial effects to our patrons/clients.

According to the Chinese Medicine, our hands contain many acupressure and
reflexology points that are connected to the organs in our body. Let us say your client
suffers headache, you can massage the tip of his/her fingers to reduce the pain.

Before you perform a hand massage, make sure to do the

following:

1. Let the client take a seat to make him/her feel comfortable.

2. Wash your hands using soap for 20 seconds to remove dirt and
viruses. Especially now that we are facing this COVID-19 pandemic,
it is a must to wash our hands more often.
3. Wear PPEs such as masks, apron etc. for protection.
4. Remove any jewelry from the body part to be massaged.
5. Check and analyze the condition of client’s hand. If there are signs of
infection, do not proceed with the hand spa treatment.
