LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 6

COT No. 1
GRADE VI- Zeal
November 18, 2021

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to:
A. Identify the concept and definition of ratio
B. Express ratio in three different ways such as in word, colon and fraction form
C. Show affection to other in times of pandemic through sharing.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: The Concept of Ratio
Values Integration: Appreciate the value of sharing in times of challenges in pandemic
Subject Integration: Science (Separating mixtures), TLE (Identifying varieties of ornamental
plants), ESP ( the value of sharing in times of pandemic)
Strategies: Retrieval Practice, Inquiry-based learning, Feedback process, Dual
Coding (words and visual combination), Experiential Learning

Materials: LCD Projector or TV Projector, Laptop

III. PROCEDURE
A. Review of the Previous Lesson:
Let us identify the two main parts of a fraction by answering the following questions:
1. It refers to the number on the top of the line of a fraction. Answer: Numerator
2. It refers to the number below the line of a fraction: Answer: Denominator
3. Can you identify where the numerator and denominator of the fraction below are?
Numerator
1
Denominator 2

- Tell the pupils that the review of the lesson presented has to do with next lesson of
the teacher

B. Motivation:
- I have here a mixture of fruits. Can you separate these fruits
according to its kind? How many fruits do you see in each
kind?
- Can you guess what the ratio of apples to mangoes is?
- Hmmmmm!. By the way, what is ratio?
C. Lesson Proper: (Discussion of the Lesson)
Ratio is a relationship between two numbers of the same kind. It is a way of comparing two or more
quantities having the same units.
- Now let us go back to the pictures presented

- Let us compare the first the quantity of apples and mangoes to get the ratio
- We have three ways in writing the ratio:
What is the ratio of apples and mangoes?

Ratio Word form Colon form Fraction form

a is to b a:b a
b
Apples to mangoes 3 is to 7 3:7 3
7

D. Concept Formation
To better understand our lesson, let us have another example
- Can you identify what are these plants? (Show pictures of variety of snake plants and orchids)
-

- Yes! these are all ornamental plants. We can see that there are variety of snake plants and
orchids.
- Can you count how many are the snake plants? How about the orchids?
- Now, let us identify the ratio of these plants according to its kind by using the table below.
Ratio Word form Colon form Fraction form
a is to b a:b a
b
Snake plants to 4 is to 6 4:6 4
Orchids 6

- In this case, like fraction, ratio can be simplified into lowest terms as well
4
- In a ratio , we simplify it by dividing both quantities to its greatest common factor (GCF)

E. Application
Read the Story
Covid -19 pandemic has immensely affect the lives of every individual and it is the time of
sharing and take responsibility for those who have heavily affected especially the poor. That is
why Mr. Cruz decided to distribute face masks to the parents of his learners during the
distribution of modules. He has 100 pieces of face masks and distributes it evenly to his 20
parents. What is the ratio of parent and the number of face mask that each parent would
receive?
Solutions:
Step-by-step
a. Get the number of pieces of face mask and number of parents
Face masks = 100 Parents = 20
b. What is the ratio of parents to face mask?
20 is to 100
c. Simplify the ratio to its lowest terms in a fraction form
20 20 1
÷ =
100 20 5
d. Therefore, the ratio of parents and the number of facemask that each would receive will
be… 1 is to 5

F. Generalization:
What are the three ways that a ratio can be written?
- A ratio can be written in three different ways such as:
 word form → a is to b
 colon form → a : b
 fraction form ( by giving the value of their quotient ) → a⁄b
Can we simplify the ratio just like fractions? How?
- Yes! We can simplify the ratio just like fraction by dividing both quantities to its greatest
common factor (GCF)

G. Evaluation
General Direction: Group A will answer Set A question and Group B for Set B

SET A:
There are 20 Mathematics books and 23 Science books in the mini library corner of Grade 6 Zeal.
What is the ratio of Mathematics books to Science books? Express your answer in three different
ways. Use the table below.

SET B:
A class of 32 students has 12 girls. What is the ratio of girls to boys? Simplify your answer to its
lowest form.
Steps Solution:

H. Assignment
Read the Problem:
. Read and express the ratio of the given problem below.
A class of 54 students has 16 boys.
a. What is the ratio of boys to girls?
b. What is the ratio of boys to the entire class?

Use the table below for you answer

Ratio Word form Colon form Fraction form
a is to b a:b a
b
a. Boys to Girls
b. Boys to the entire class
