LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS V

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards
The learners demonstrate understanding of four fundamental operations involving decimals
and ratio and proportion.
B. Performance Standards
The learners are able to apply the four fundamental operations involving decimals and ratio
and proportion in mathematical problems and real-life situations
C. Learning Competencies/Objectives
Express ratio using either colon (:) of fraction form.
II. CONTENT
Visualizes the ratio of two given numbers M5NS-IIh-122
Express ratio using either colon or fraction.
Expresses ratio in the simplest form – M5NS- IIi-125
Integration: Science, English

III. LEARNING TASK

1. Preliminary Activities
A. Song
B. Drill
Give the lowest term of the following fraction. Find your partner

C. Review
Find the quotient of the given numbers. (Think Pair and Share)
1. 18.3 ÷ 6=
2. 71.28 ÷ 54 =
3. 0.28 ÷ 0.4 =
4. 729 ÷ 0.9 =
5. 112 ÷ 0.16 =

D. Motivation
Guessing the wordless ( Science Integration )

Square root multiplication table H2O

Water as H20
The ratio of Hydrogen atoms to oxygen atoms is two is to one.
Did you know that water is the most common chemical compound that makes up the lakes,
rivers and oceans. A molecule of water contains 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen.

What is the importance of water in our life? As a pupil, how do you conserve water at home
and in school? (Values Integration)

What are the uses of water? (EPP and Health Integration) use for cooking, drinking, washing
of clothes, watering the plants and cleaning our body.

2. Lesson Proper
A. Engagement
Presentation: (English Grammar Integration / Reading Comprehension)
Look at the illustration below.

How many pupils are there?

How many books are there?
How do you relate the number of pupils to the number of books?
How many quantities were compared?
What do you call if we are comparing two or more quantities?
Ratio is the comparison of two or more quantities.
The teacher will present a video about expressing ratio in different forms.

B. Explore (Hand-on learning task using manipulatives)

Pair of shoes of the pupils Pair of slippers of the pupils
Ballpen Pencil

How many pair of shoes? Pair of slippers?

How many ballpens are there?
How many pencils are there?
How do you compare the number of pair of shoes to the number of pair of slippers?
The teacher will explain the following topics for better understanding of the lesson.
Give another set of examples

C. Explain
The ratio can be written in several ways such as the following:
a. in colon form 9:6

b. in fraction form 9
6

Ratio is a comparison of two quantities. The numbers 9 and 6 are called

terms. The order of comparison is important
Example:

The ratio of pair of shoes to pair of slippers 9:6

9:6 – 2nd Term 9 – 1st Term

6 – 2nd Term
1st Term

Ratio can be expressed in simplest form or lowest form just like fractions.

D. Elaborate
1. Activities
Group the pupils into 4 groups.
Let them perform the activity given, with the guidance of setting of standards in
doing outside activities.

Before going to outside activities you need to solve the problem first.

Activity 1. Read and answer.

It is Christmas time the Lumbre family are now preparing for their noche Buena. Inside
the fruit basket are 6 dalandan, 10 rambutan fruits, 7 star apples, 9 indian mangoes and
6 melons. Find the ratio of dalandan to rambutan fruits, star apples to Indian mangoes,
Indian mangoes to melon, and Indian mangoes to the total number of fruits.
Ratio Colon Form Fraction Form Lowest Term
Activity 2. Directions: Give the ratio in fraction and in colon form.

Ratio Colon Form Fraction Form Lowest Term

1. Blue garbage can to
classroom
2. Blue big tires to big red
tires
3. faucet in hand washing
to Grade V pupils

Always write your answer in lowest term.

2. Generalization
What is ratio?
What are ways in writing ratio?

3. Application
Write the following ratios to lowest term.
1. What is the ratio of Saturday and Sunday to the days in a week?
2. What is the ratio of the number of months in a year to months in a decade?
3. What is the ratio of the letter A to all the letters in the word MATHEMATICS?

E. Evaluate
Directions: Express each ratio using colon and fraction then in simplest form.

Colon Fraction Simplest Form

1. 18 books to 24 pupils
2. 6 fathers to 18 sons
3. 85 items out of 100
4. 75 out of 225 graduates
are unemployed
5. 12 cups to 8 glasses

IV. Assignment
Solve the following problems. Express the ratio in simplest term.
1. There are 29 pink beads and 9 purple beads on Mica’s necklace. What is the ratio of the
number of pink beads to the number of purple beads?

2. 30 of the tables at MD’s Italian Restaurant are full and other 10 tables are empty. What is
the ratio of the number of empty tables to the number of full tables?

3. In the auditorium there are 8 red chairs and 42 blue chairs. What is the ratio of the number
of blue chairs to the number of red chairs?
