Function of Content

Definition of content

 Content is define as “Information to be learned in school, another term for knowledge (a collection of
facts, concepts, generalization, principles and theories)”.

 Content comes in any form (audio, text and video) and it informs, entertains, enlightens or teaches
people who consume it.

Current research evidence from educational psychology calls for a change in the function of curriculum
content which should be less on covering it and more on using content to develop a learner's individual
way of understanding or sense-making. Teachers need to allow learners to raise their own questions,
generate their own answers or solutions.

Curriculum content

 Content must take account of the environment in which the course will be used, the needs of the
learners, and principles of teaching and learning.

In order to facilitate learning that changes how students think and understand, teachers must begin by
finding out students' prior knowledge or conceptions and then design learning activities that will change
these pre-insfructional concepts.

Learner-centered teaching also regards content as more of competency-based leaming in which students
master targeted skills and content before progressing to another lesson. The more important practice here
is to accommodate students' differing pace of learning.

Purposes of content:

 To help organize materials.

 To help a sequential relationship of material.
 To present material basic to a general understanding of a course.
 To furnish a source of valuable information
 To present application

The four main purpose of content:

Entertain
 Attention grabbing and entertaining content creates an emotional reaction in people, which can tug on
their heart strings in a way that urges them to make a change.
Inspire
 Inspiring content reaches your audience on an equally emotional level. Be it celebrity endorsements,
events or reviews and ratings – these types of content are aiming at pushing your audience towards
the purchasing decision while inspiring them on an emotional level.
Educate
 Educational content is less emotional and more rational, and aims at helping your audience solve
challenges they might be struggling with.
Convince
 Convincing content aims at giving your audiences the last push they need to become customers. As
opposed to inspiring content, this category convinces through facts and figures and addresses rational
interests of your audience.
The content is:

 United with the goals and objectives of the basic education curriculum.
 Responds to the needs of the learner.
 Includes cognitive skill and affective elements.
 Facts are basic in the structure of cognitive subject matter
