Lesson 5

Kant and Deontology

Brain and Heart Drill No.1

Think and share an instance in your life where you accept rules/laws that are right and reject
those that you think are irrational and impermissible because they are self-contradictory.
What did you feel?

I believe that our home, our workplace, and everywhere I go are the places in my life where I
have accepted the rules and laws. I believed that laws and rules were crucial because they would
direct us in the proper direction and help us make the best decisions possible at every turn of our
lives.

TASK 2: You need to refer to at least 1 educational link/reference that would talk about
deontology. Take note of the important ideas or insights you learned from the educational
links. Write them down on MY NOTES so you will not forget them

Title of the Video/Reference: Deontology | Ethics Defined

MY NOTES:

 Deontology is an ethical theory that uses rules to distinguish right from

wrong.
 Associated with philosopher Immanuel Kant. It is believed that ethical
actions follow universal moral laws like, don’t lie, don’t steal and, don’t
cheat.
 Deontology doesn’t require weighing the costs and benefits of a situation
 Deontology can produce results that many people find unacceptable.
