Call for Papers

Joint Workshop on Marketing and Culture in Construction

21-22 September 2011, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Background
CIB Commissions TG82 - Marketing in Construction and W112 - Culture in Construction, will have a Joint Workshop on Marketing and Culture in Construction during the forthcoming International Construction Business and Management Symposium 2011 to be held at the International Campus, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, on 21-22 September, 2011. One of the main themes is 'Culture in Construction'. Keynote speakers will include Professor Richard Fellows and over 30 papers will be presented covering aspects of international business and project management in construction. Perceptions of environmental uncertainty and organizational control influence strategic behaviour. As national culture influences these perceptions we expect to find cultural differences in interpretation and response to strategic issues. Different cultures are likely to interpret and respond to the same strategic issue in different ways. Not only within local (project) level, but also on national and international level. Papers within this conference are covering most actual insights and experiences from several parts of the globe, thus proving to be the culture-topic as not only an important but especially also a connecting factor between academics and practitioners from industry. Aspects of language, history, professional background values and attitudes, education, law and politics, technology and material culture and social organisation will have an influence over the key business, marketing and project decision makers within international clients, contractors, consultants, manufacturers and suppliers.

CIB Information Bulletin

The construction industry relies heavily on the human resource. The clients, managers, designers, investors, and a whole range of diverse stakeholders are all involved in a series of vital relationships that are just as important to project success as technical knowledge and know-how. As construction projects become increasingly international as well as interdisciplinary, the risk and cost of disharmonious working grows ever larger. The growth of IT and the increased reliance on large mergers and joint-ventures have created new problems, which require a new set of solutions. And this especially, because -differences between- human behaviour still plays a key-role within nowadays construction processes.
