ORAL COMMUNICATION

SPEECH STYLE

 The way we communicate varies depending on a lot of factors such as the speech
context, speech purpose, and speech deliver y. The form of language that the speaker
uses which characterized by the degree of formality is known as speech style. (Martin
Joos)

5 TYPES OF SPEECH STYLE

I. INTIMATE
 This style is PRIVATE, which occurs between or among close family members or
individuals.
 The language used in this style may not be shared in public.

Examples: conversation between; Family, Boyfriend/Girlfriend

II. CASUAL
 This style is common among peers and friends. Jargon, slang, or the vernacular
language are used.
 Free and easy participation of both speaker and listener.
 Common expressions; wassup,kinda.., hey guys!, arat na.

Examples: internet chatrooms, tweets,

III. CONSULATIVE
 This style is the standard one.
 Professional or mutually acceptable language is a must in this style.
 Used a semi-formal communication

Example of situations: communication between teachers and students, employers and


employees and doctor and patient.

IV. FORMAL
 This style is used in formal settings.
 Unlike the consultative style, this is one-way.
 Scripted speech

Example: Sermons, Graduation speeches, pronouncements made by judges and


announcements in school.

V. FROZEN
 This style is “frozen” in time and remains unchanged.
 Revisions needs careful development of thoughts and other technical writing
considerations.
 It mostly occurs in ceremonies.

Common Examples: Preamble to the Constitution, Lord’s Prayer, and Allegiance to country
or flag.
