B. Plan/ Lay out for

seedling production.

Trees contribute to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air

quality, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the
process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen.
They also filter air by removing dust and absorbing other pollutants like carbon
monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. After trees intercept unhealthy
particles, rain washes them to the ground.

allow for easy cultivation, intercropping and harvesting. There is no absolute
minimum for how many fruit trees constitute an orchard, but five is generally
accepted lower limit. There are three methods of planting: direct seeding, actual

General Methods of Arranging Trees in the Orchard

There are five general methods of arranging trees in the orchard
or plantation depending on terrain, soil condition, moisture, and other
conditions. Tree spacing should be determined by the specific type of
tree planted. Remember to have sufficient space at the end of the rows
of trees to allow equipment being used in the orchard to pass through.
1. Square method – this is the most basic and common
arrangement of orchard trees. A tree stands in each corner of the
square or rectangle, essentially forming very regularly spaced
rows. The rectangle is a variation on the square that allows more
space between the trees in one direction. This layou t offers easy
access for cultivation.
2. Quincunx method – this consists of four trees at the corners of
a square with one tree in the middle. The tree at the center is a
temporary tree, or filler. A temporary tree or filler is planted in an
orchard only to cultivate for the first several years.
3. Rectangular method – in this method, the trees are planted
from a distance, from north to south, from east to west. In this
method, the trees enjoy more sunlight. It is also called alternate
system.
4. Hexagonal method – in this method, six trees are planted to
form a hexagon with the seventh tree planted in the middle. This
method allows 15% more planting than the square method.
5. Contour method – this technique gives growers the opportunity
to use areas that are vulnerable to erosion like hillsides. Trees planted
in parallel rows that contour around a landscape help control erosion
and retain moisture. Terraces are also a form of contour planting

15
How to Plant a Tree

1. Select the right tree for your location.

Use a tree that will grow well in your area.

2. . Dig a hole large enough to spread out the roots and place the tree in the
hole, work loose soil around the roots

This keeps the roots from settling too deep while still allowing them to
penetrate the surrounding soil.

3. Prune the tree sparingly and only if necessary.

Remove only dead, broken, and diseased branches and roots that are
crushed and girdling or growing around the main stem.

4. Set the tree in the hole with the root collar (just above the roots) flush or
slightly above natural grade.

Planting too deep is a leading cause of mortality in newly planted trees. Do

not pick up the tree by the trunk. Always handle by the container or root ball.

5. Remove all foreign materials from the root ball.

This includes wires, twine, cords, containers, and non-biodegradable bags. If

planting a tree with roots wrapped in burlap, remove as much of the burlap
as possible. This allows water to seep in and the roots to grow out.

6. Gently fill the hole with the same soil that came out of the hole.

Do not add soil amendments. Settle the soil with water. Packing the soil
damages and breaks fine roots.

7. Water the tree for at least the first two years, but don’t over water.

16
A newly planted tree requires six to eight gallons of water for every diameter
inch of trunk — per week. A thorough soaking is much better than light,
frequent watering.

8. Protect the tree from animals and humans.

Staking to the ground a wire-mesh cage at least three feet in diameter and

four feet tall can keep deer and livestock from eating your

Also can safeguard your tree from weed whackers, which can easily kill
your tree.

9. Do not fertilize the tree during the first growing season.

Too much nitrogen will burn tender roots, slowing growth and delaying
establishment

Seedlings Production Guide

1. Prepare a suitable potting soil.

2. Fill the cells in the trays with good quality

potting soil.

3. Sow one or two seeds per cell at 1/4 inch (7 mm)

deep and cover with the potting soil.

17
4. After seedling emergence (approximately seven

to twelve days from sowing) thin to a single

seedling per cell.

5. Prick the plants in an individual container.
