DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 7

I. Objectives

A. Content Standard
The learners demonstrate an understanding of classifying substances as elements
or compounds.

B. Performance Standard
The learners should be able to make a chart, poster, or multimedia presentation of
common elements showing their names, symbols, and uses.

C. Learning Competency
The learners should be able to recognize that substances are classified into
elements and compounds (S7MT-Ig-h-5)

D. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
1. distinguish the difference between elements and compounds
2. appreciate the importance of vital elements and compounds necessary for our
daily existence
3. classify substances as element or compound

II. Subject Matter

A. Content: Elements and Compounds
B. References: The World of Chemistry by Araneta and Catris, pp. 80-85
C. Resources/Materials: Different substances, Audiovisual materials

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
Everybody standup and let us
pray. The students pray.

2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning sir!

3. Energizer

5. Checking of Assignments
6. Recalling the Classroom Rules
B. Developmental Activities
1. Drill
2. Review
3. Unlocking of Difficulties
C. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
I have here different
substances. (The teacher
shows the substances). The students look on the substances.

I would like to ask 3 volunteers

from the class to group them
into two.
Three students volunteer. They group the
substances into two.

What was your basis for the We based the grouping according to their
grouping of the substances? properties as element or compound.

2. Discussion An element is a substance made up of

Who can describe an element? only one kind of atom.

Will you give an example of an Hydrogen

element? Oxygen
Calcium
(Students answer vary).

How about the meaning of Compound is a substance formed when

compound? two or more elements combine
chemically.

Carbon dioxide
Cite examples of compounds.
Sugar
Starch
(Students answer vary).

3. Generalization
Differentiate element from
compound. Element is a substance made up of only
one kind of atom while compound is a
substance formed when two or more
elements combine chemically.

4. Application
Classify the following
substances as element or
compound.
a. Aluminum
b. Salt
c. Water
d. Sulfur a. Aluminum > element
e. Carbon monoxide b. Salt > compound
c. Water > compound
d. Sulfur > sulfur
e. Carbon monoxide > compound

5. Valuing
Why are elements and
compounds vital to our daily Elements and compounds are vital to our
existence? daily existence because it comprises the
food we eat, the gas that we inhale and
exhale and facilitates our metabolic
processes.

IV. Evaluation
