Introduction
 The word personality has been derived
from Latin word ‘persona’.
 Personality is the total quality of an
individual behavior as it is shown in the
habits, thinking, attitude, interest, the
manner of acting and the personal
philosophy of life.
 It include physical, mental, emotional and
temperamental makeup.
Definition
 Personality is the sum of activities that can
be discovered by actual observation over
a long enough period of time to give
reliable information.

 One of the most important characteristic
of a personality is that it is a product of
heredity and environment.
 A child to not born with a personality,
develops the same in course of
continuous interaction with his
environment. The social and cultural
factor as well as the various experience
influence the development of personality.
 Personality include the cognitive, affective
and psychomotor behavior and covers all the
conscious, subconscious and unconscious
also.
 It is a specific and unique for each and every
individual.
 It is not static, but dynamic in nature.

itself to the environment on a continuous
basis.

Psychoanalytic Theory
 Sigmund Freud an Austrian neurologist is considered as the
father of psychoanalytic theory.
 Freud organize the structure of personality into three major
component the id, ego and superego.
 The Id contain all our biological based drives and operate
accordingly to the pleasure principle. Id driven behavior are
impulsive.
 The ego function on the basis of reality principle. It maintains
harmony between the external word, id and the superego.
 The superego is referred to as perfection principle. The
superego is important in the socialization of the individual
 A person who is well adjusted or mentally healthy has all the
three component of personality. Freud would expect anyone
in whom any of the component is absent or out of balance
to display maladaptive behavior.
