Part 2: Uncovering Your Leadership Assumptions

Answer the following questions about leadership. By reflecting on these questions, you
will find what assumptions are driving your leadership thinking.

1. Describe two stories of leadership. One story should describe a positive experience
you’ve had with leadership and the second story should describe a time when you
had a negative experience with leadership.
Answers:
2. In your own words provide a definition of leadership.
Answer:
Based from my experiences, leadership is inspiring others to move towards a common goal.
I believe that being a leader is not only about yourself being followed by your subordinates.
But, it is on how you inspired everyone to reach success with fairness, quality and love.

3. Using your definition of leadership, please elaborate how you first came to
understand (or know) your leadership definition. (why did you decide on this
definition…why is it important…what made you write it?)

Answer:
My concept of a leader was based on my experiences as a nurse. Being a nurse is not a sole-
distinct professions. I cannot be a nurse alone inside a hospital. This means that in order for
me to achieve my sole purpose as a nurse, I need others. I need to learn from their experiences
and they also need to learn something from me, and I think that is leadership, if I will be able
to make others work to attain greatness with compassion and love. As such, I believe that to
lead is to inspire.

4. Describe the individuals (leaders) or organizations that influence your leadership definition.
Answer:
One great story of leadership that I admire the most was the initiative of the Former Vice-
President and Angat-Buhay Founder Leni Robredo against the COVID-19 Pandemic. Robredo
initialized her Anti-COVID-19 plan as “Kalayaan sa COVID“ (Freedom from COVID-19) plan.

According to Rey (2021), Robredo's thorough strategy was created after consulting with
professionals from several fields. Additionally, it is based on actual field experience. A
"mahusay at matinong" (competent and wise) leader should be concentrating on the COVID-19
response plan in order to be "liberated" from the dread of being ill. She said that this would put
a stop to corruption, taking a direct shot at the purported aberrant pandemic contracts.
She intends to "repair" the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation by forming an audit
team as part of her free and accessible healthcare proposal. Additionally, she will promote the
following:

 Free COVID-19 examination

 Ensuring that there are sufficient finances to cover the cost of immunizations for Filipinos
the expansion of hospital capacity
 In each barangay, a nurse
 implementation of a telemedicine system akin to the free teleconsultation service offered by the
Office of the Vice President E-Konsulta

Part 3: Understanding Your Leadership Beliefs

For each of the questions in this section, ask yourself:

1. What were my assumptions?

Answer:
In being a leader, my assumptions were;
-a leader is responsible for his/her team
-a leader is the one who manages the outcome of a goal.
-a leader is the ultimate responsible for the entirety of the group.
-a leader should be knowledgeable enough
-a leader must be willing to learn
-a leader must uphold values and virtues that are necessary for the team

2. What influenced my assumptions?

Answer:
My assumptions were based on my experiences in my workplace as a nurse. These
thinking of mine were strengthened by my colleagues in the workplace who are always
there to journey with me in realizing my potentials as a human being. Moreover, these
leadership characteristics of mine were influenced by my family, especially by my
parents, who are always there to mold me to become a better person.

3. Would others (co-workers, friends, supervisors) see the situations I

described differently?
Answer:
Every person is a unique being. Man’s uniqueness came from his
capacity to think rationally. Therefore, there is a great tendency that
what would be my perspectives as a person would be different from
others. This is always real-life case. However, as a leader, it is always
very important to be united with others despite the diversity of
opinions and clashes of ideas. As a leader, it is my right to be heard
and also my responsibility to listen to others’ opinions.

Answer the following questions about leadership beliefs. By reflecting on these

questions above, you will find what beliefs you hold about leadership.(Write at least
two paragraphs for each question)
1. Can people who have caused others harm be leaders?
Answer:
Unfortunately, leaders who damage others are nevertheless able to hold positions of power.
They were able do injure because they rose to leadership positions by force. good
management? No. Leadership? Yes. Because of his ascension to leadership status based on
his actions and views, Osama Bin Laden was able to have a significant effect on the whole
globe, garner millions of supporters, and execute hundreds of people.

2. Should leaders have certain qualities to be able to lead?

Answer:
I think everyone has a different idea of what qualifies as a leader. However, I think that in
order to be effective, leaders need to have patience, focus, confidence, and a love for what
they are doing. They also need to be held accountable for their decisions.

3. Who decides who leads?

Answer:
Unless a natural leader steps up to the challenge, the team members determine who will be
the leader. Even though it isn't the smartest move for the team, leaders might evolve along
the process. Team members aid leaders in discovering their best selves so they can muster the
guts to assume leadership roles.

4. How do leaders gain credibility?

Answer:
Leaders establish credibility through succeeding and attaining their objectives. Credible
leaders maintain consistency in both their words and deeds. They don't frequently change
their minds and go back on their decisions.

5. In general, is there something good about leadership?

Answer:
By listening to your team, communicating as effectively as you can, setting an example, being
passionate, making decisions that stick, and identifying mentors and role models, good
leadership is attainable.

6. What do you think is the purpose for leadership?

Answer:
Leadership enables one to direct others in the completion of a certain task and inspires team
members to perform at their highest level in order to achieve tasks and goals.

7. Is leadership behavior developed through personal experiences or through external forces?

Answer:
Personal experiences shape a leader's behavior. A leader is developed by the situations and
chances they put themselves in to succeed. If a person does not aspire to positions of
leadership or do not get along well with others in teams, they cannot develop into a leader.
Part 4: Finalizing Your Leadership Philosophy

Now that you’ve identified your leadership values, uncovered your leadership
assumptions, and understand what beliefs guide your leadership thinking, you are now
ready to write statements reflecting your leadership philosophy using the responses
above. Statements about your
leadership should be written in the present moment not in the future tense. Creating
“present moment” statements helps you to internalize and visualize your philosophy as
it is happening now, not in the future or the past.

Your leadership philosophy should be a statement that consists of your responses from
the above exercise. It doesn’t have to include everything, but it should encompass the
general idea of what you’ve written. It doesn’t have to be formatted in a certain way –
just whatever makes sense to you. You can write one sentence statements or you can
write a story explaining your philosophy. Start with an initial draft of your philosophy
and write it down. Revise it as often as you need. Remember, your philosophy can
change depending on where you are at with your leadership.

Answer

My Leadership Philosophy is…

I gain leadership via my deeds and convictions.

I must maintain an open mind by maintaining patience, focus, confidence, and passion.

I assist my teammates in completing the tasks required of us.

By succeeding, fulfilling my goals, and keeping my word, I build credibility.

I choose strong decisions to lead my team in the right direction after identifying role models.

I encourage team members to bring their best self to bear on the project at hand.

I give myself chances and opportunities to succeed like I've never done before.
After you’ve finished, type out and include your personal Philosophy with this assignment.

Part 5: Presenting Your Leadership Philosophy

your professor. During the presentation you must address the following questions. You
may present this information however you choose. Be creative!

1. What shaped your leadership philosophy?

Answer:
My Leadership Philosophy was shaped by my experiences at home and in my
workplace. Through my interactions with my colleagues and most especially with my
family members, I learned to understand and to realize what kind of leader am I and
also my capacity as a human person.

2. What are your 4 most important leadership values and why they are important to you?
Answer:
The four (4) most important leadership values that are very significant to me are; Love ,
Collaboration, Integrity and Justice. These values are very important to me because,
they signify a true leadership character. A leader must have a loving heart for himself
and for his team. When he has love he learnes how to collaborate and treat everyone
with integrity and justice.

3. What was your personal leadership philosophy? (Tell us about what you came up with)
Answer:
TO LEAD IS TO INSPIRE
The above infinitive phrase is my own personal leadership philosophy. This mentality
and attitude came to me from my work as a nurse. I realized that being a leader is
letting and inspiring others to realize their potentials as human beings.

4. How will you use this statement and Put it into practice in your work?
Answer:
Putting leadership in my workplace is not that easy because of the diversity of people
and of everyone’s culture. However, I realized that I should start by listening to others.
To listen to other’s opinions and sentiments is one of the best ways to show a true
leadership character.
