Discipline is a concept everyone is aware of, but few truly understand (Fern, 2013). School policies are principles
made to establish discipline in school. Discipline ensures order, veracity, and punctuality. It is a necessity in achieving
a structured environment to elevate and promote quality learning, productivity, and efficiency.
Obedience plays a vital role in the individual’s decision-making practices. This individual habit of keen obedience may
be equipped by education and training. However, with the awareness of school policy, some students fail to follow
certain school regulations which result in corresponding consequences. Furthermore, it affects fellow students’
decision whether they would follow the policy or be influenced by These policies may differ from that of a normal
school policy because these are designed to train aspiring maritime students the proper decorum they must observe
on board ship.
There are 87 Maritime Schools in the Philippines Accredited by CHED and Marina (Philpad.com, 2017).From the latest
Manpower Report byO and ICS (Manilatimes.net, 2016), it is stated that the Philippines is ranked being the second
largest supplier of maritime labor globally. And the Philippines remains to be the largest source of ratings. Foreign
ship-owners are known to prefer Filipino seafarers because of their dedication, hard work, English language fluency,
adaptability, and discipline. Thus, discipline continues to revolve to be the number one factor that affects the
performance of maritime. Corresponding consequences and punishment are mandated to those students who
violated the agreed rules and regulations of the school. The very reason for these disciplinary sanctions is to instill into
the students the value of discipline in following the said policies. Okumbe (1998) stated that consequences to the
violations are administered to bring about a desirable change in behavior and therefore improving school discipline, if
commensurate with the offense committed. Upon entering the school premises, the student is checked whether
he/she has the following: proper type of uniform to be worn; type A which is all white with black shoes and white
socks, type B which is white upper uniform and black slacks with black belt and socks and Executive Attire which is
long sleeve polo with necktie and black slacks, socks, and shoes. Wearing of I.D.s, Proper haircut, ear piercings,
incomplete buttons, and belt are also checked. Failure in following the policy results to maritime students being held
at the gate. Preventing them to enter and attend class.
