Discussion

DIMENSIONS OF MULTIMEDIA
Multimedia is derived from the words “multi” and “media.” It refers to a content
that uses more than one element such as text, graphics, animation, sound, video,
among others. Other terms related to multimedia are hypermedia, interactivity, and
authoring.
Hypermedia refers to how multimedia screens of information are connected. It is a
more inclusive term to hypertext. If you still remember your Computer class, you
may have experienced coding of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) for web
design. Hyperlinks are accessible through a click, tap, or hover.
Interactivity refers to the user's ability to control content as a response to a given
prompt. Interactive web pages are integrated with Javascript coding. For example,
if you wish to withdraw money, you will go to the nearest automated teller machine
(ATM). You will just insert your card. Through touch screen technology, you will tap
the icon that corresponds to the action you wish to happen such as withdraw,
deposit, and check balance.
Authoring refers to the creation of multimedia products. Authoring systems allow
users to create applications. An author ware is a program that enables one to write
hypertext or multimedia applications. The purpose of multimedia authoring tools
are to create and edit a product, and to deliver it through a presentation scheme.
Macromedia Flash, Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation, Inkscape, Wavelab, and
Adobe Premier are examples of authoring tools.

Five Elements of Multimedia

The five elements of multimedia are text, graphics, animation, sound, and video.

1. The first multimedia element is text. It is the first and most common
multimedia element that utilizes letters, numbers, or symbols to express an idea. A
typeface refers to a set of fonts that have common design characteristics. Fonts
may either be serif or sans-serif.

2. The second multimedia element is graphics. It refers to illustrations done
through manual or digital means. Examples are paintings, digital sketches, or
flowcharts.

An infographic is a multimedia tool that combines text and graphics. Images are
also powerful tools. A popular idiom, “a picture paints a thousand words” means
that a visual representation is open for interpretation.

3. The third multimedia element is animation. It refers to a set of static images

combined to create an illusion of motion. A Graphic Interface Format (GIF)
animation is used during slide presentations, or for content sites like 9GAG or
Tumblr. If you want to learn about how tectonic plates move, you can just search
for an animation about convergent, divergent, and transform plate boundaries.

4. The fourth multimedia element is sound. It refers to presenting information

that appeals to hearing. For example, sound effects in science fiction movies set the
mood to the audience. The sound of a wand is distinct from that of a lightsaber.

5. The last multimedia element is video. It refers to captured, recorded, processed,

transmitted, and reconstructed moving pictures. Nowadays, most people are fond
of recording videos and uploading them in their social media accounts. Videos take
too much space as compared to other elements. Editing videos also entail much
time and effort. Adobe Premiere Elements, MAGIX Movie Edit Pro, and VEGAS
Movie Studio are examples of video editing softwares.

Types of Multimedia Products

The three types of multimedia products are for education, entertainment, and
information purposes.

Educational multimedia products include interactive Compact Disc Read-Only

Memory (CD-ROMs), multimedia presentations, and computer-based training. They
help students and teachers achieve optimum teaching and learning experience.
Some workbooks come with a CD-ROM. A teacher may use a CD-ROM as a teacher
resource for suggested tests, tapescripts, and audio clips. For example, an English
as Second Language (ESL) instructor uses an interactive CD-ROM to find a
listening text instead of asking the student to read the printed text on the
workbook for one-on-one classes.

Multimedia presentations like Microsoft Powerpoint, Prezi, and Keynote allows you
to add interactive elements like links, animations, and videos to slides. For

example, a Biology teacher can introduce the metamorphosis to students by
creating a slide presentation with a chart showing still images of how a caterpillar
becomes a butterfly, a short video clip about it, and animations to highlight
important concepts. Reference softwares like Microsoft Encarta were popular
means for research before learning apps came due to limited accessibility to the
internet. Apps like Rosetta Stone and Duolingo are useful for those who wish to
learn another language. Other multimedia products such as Plickers and Kahoot
are used by teachers in the classrooms for formative assessment.

Entertainment multimedia products include multimedia games, interactive DVD

movies, and interactive television (iTV). They are the most popular form of
multimedia product. Multimedia games allow users to control, manipulate, and
navigate a character. Games range from different categories such as action, casual,
simulation, arcade, among others. Popular video game that spans generations is
Super Mario. A player controls the character, Mario in a quest to search Princess
Peach. Another music video arcade that was introduced in 1999 is Dance Dance
Revolution by Konami. A player performs on a dance platform while a song is
played. Another arcade game that is similar to the aforementioned is Just Dance by
Ubisoft. It is motion-based that allows multiple players. They must mimic the
dance steps of the actors on the screen.

Information multimedia products include information kiosks, electronic books

and magazines, and multimedia databases. Information kiosks are placed in the
public such as schools, shopping centers, and exhibitions. Usually, they have
touch screen feature. If you are in a mall and need to find the direction going to a
certain restaurant, you may use an information kiosk instead of looking for the
concierge.

Electronic books and magazines promote paperless system. Instead of purchasing a

magazine from a bookstore, you can simply subscribe to the publishing company
for a digital version. Database products are used to store and access large amount
of information. Google Earth and OPAC are examples of multimedia databases.
Some schools utilize radio-frequency identification (RFID) to store data of students
who swiped their identity card and record their arrival and departure time.

Reliability of Multimedia Information and Media

When you use a multimedia presentation, you should be aware of the clarity on the
message delivery to the audience. You also have to know your purpose as a speaker

if you intend to inform your audience about a specific information, entertain about
an experience, or persuade them to believe something you want to prove. These will
have more impact when multimedia is used.

Below are points to consider when assessing multimedia:

1. Content - This varies in each multimedia presentation. The content shown in

the multimedia presentation should be aligned with the topic being discussed.
2. Manner of Presentation - When presenting a topic using multimedia, you
should be able to deliver it in a way that your audience will not be confused with
your message. Multimedia presentation greatly helps in the communication process
between you and your audience. When you present, take note of the following:

a. Topic- You should carefully choose the topic based on its relevance to the
audience and the timeliness of the topic. If your topic is a recent activity, more
people will be engaged to listen.

b. Audience - They are one important factor to consider. Your topic and
multimedia platform will depend on what kind of audience will you have as
listeners. For example, if you are assigned to speak with a bunch of kids, you will
need to present in a more creative and playful manner. If your audience is a group
of senior citizens, a more slow-paced discussion and real-life scenarios with few
colors added to your multimedia presentation.

3. Application / Purpose - Multimedia Presentation can be utilized in different

manners. Different software applications are also used for presentations in reports,
discussions, etc. Therefore, the tools used should also be evaluated.

4. Resources - The more resources available, the more you can have varied
strategies in your presentation. You should at least know how to operate your
resources.
Some examples are:

a. PowerPoint Presentation (PPT) - a Microsoft office program. Through

this, a user can detail the information with text and images as representations.

b. Audio-Visual Presentation (AVP) - it uses visual and auditory

components. The AVP is any type of video (music video, documentaries, to name a
few) taken from any video recording device.

c. Overhead Projector - is the simplest and most affordable type of

presentation. The only thing here is it can only display stationary images and texts

made by the user using his/her bare hands. Acetate paper is the most used
medium for making the presentation.

d. Smart Board - is an innovative type of multimedia presentation wherein

the teacher in a classroom teaches lessons to students using an interactive board.
He/she can scroll the mouse or use his/her fingertips to interact with the
screen.
