What’s New
What is Multimedia?
Multimedia is basically the incorporation or mixing of different forms of media (text, graphics, audio,
video, etc.) For example, Mario is presenting his report on “Tourism in Puerto Princesa” using a slide deck
presentation equipped with audio, graphics, and video clips. Mario’s presentation is considered a "multimedia
presentation" because integration of multiple forms of media is evident. To make its concept clearer, take a
look at the illustration below.

The words around Multimedia System are its components. A combination of any of these components

results in the creation of multimedia output or product. Meanwhile, a multimedia device is any storage that
allows a person to create and access various types of media files. Examples of a multimedia device include a
memory card, a tablet computer, and an MP3 player.

Multimedia does not necessarily have to be complicated or sophisticated. In fact, students and
teachers today are already using different multimedia formats in the classroom. As exampled above, a slide
deck presentation (with images, animation, audio, etc.) that your teachers use can be a multimedia
presentation. Meanwhile, combined graphics and texts like illustrations, diagrams, and charts in your
Mathematics or Araling Panlipunan subjects can also be good examples of multimedia resources.

Here are some of the most common multimedia formats that are used in the classroom today.
1. Slide deck presentation

A PowerPoint slide deck is simply a collection of slides put

together in the same presentation. This kind of multimedia is usually
made to help a person in his/her oral presentation (e.g. report,
proposal, seminar, etc.)
A slide deck presentation is a very helpful tool when
presenting or explaining something. Furthermore, not only does it
keep you in check, but it also allows you to manage your time better.
It is an aid designed to help you remember the necessary points that
need to be addressed and helps present those to your audience in a
much more effective manner.

When you make your own

presentation, there are some
basic points that you always have to remember according to
microsoft.com.
✓ Choose readable font family.
✓ Choose a font size that your audience can read from a distance.
✓ Keep your text simple and minimize the amount of text on your slides.
✓ Use art, color, animation, and graphics to help convey your message.
✓ Make labels for charts and graphs understandable.
✓ Check the spelling and grammar.

2. Infographic
An infographic is a combination of imagery, charts, and text that gives a
bird’s-eye-view or overview of a certain subject. Take a look the example below.

Infographics differ in style and format depending on their purpose. It could

be a Timeline Infographic, Comparison, Data Visualization, Process/How-to, and
Location or Map. Infographics are relatively simple, poster-like images that display
data and information in a far more interesting way. They allow you to condense a
large amount of information, so your audience can easily understand and digest it.
It allows you to get your most important ideas across in a manner that people will
remember. When you use infographics, you guarantee higher audience engagement
and retention.

Infographics can be done manually by sketching or drawing graphs and

illustrations or electronically. There are websites (e.g. pictochart.com) which allow
you to freely create a downloadable, ready-to-print infographic material.

3. Videos/Films
The digital rise has incorporated the
utilization of educational videos to teaching-
learning inside the classroom. Moreover,
students today are introduced to activities and projects that require
filming and editing of videos.

Digital video is a multimedia format that works by using a

digital video signal rather than an analog one. It can be copied
multiple times without degradation in quality and can be edited using
readily available offline and online applications such as Quik, iMovie,
KineMaster, PowerDirector, VideoGrade, PicPlayPost, VivaVideo,
Videoshop, ALIVE Movie Maker, Vizmato, FilmoraGo, VideoShow, and
many more.
Vlogs and YouTube video tutorials are in today. Through these videos, people learn from vloggers and
YouTubers for free. In the same way, students – like yourself – can also use these multimedia platforms to

learn from or share something to others.
However, the online world is a whole different place than the world we live in. Hence, always bear in
mind these ten cyber etiquette tips from Psychology Today by Raychelle Cassanda Lohmann as cited by

4. Offline and Online Games

Games are a good form of multimedia because almost all components of
multimedia system can be made evident. Games are interactive. Even simple ones
such as Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Interactive Quiz, Mapping Game, and many
others can be a good form of multimedia games.
However, online educational games are a step higher because they offer an
array of other possibilities. There are educational games that provide simulation,
interaction, and even virtual reality.

5. Web conferencing/virtual meetings/classes

Web conferencing and virtual meeting/class is not something new to the Philippine setting. However, it
is seldom practiced since face-to-face mode is always
considered the best option in addition to the issue of
internet connectivity. But the COVID-19 pandemic
has compelled the country to make web conferencing
and online classes an option in education.

Web conferencing and online classes can be

done though different online platforms. Even social
media like Facebook can be a means, but to a
limited scope only. Some most common platforms for
such are Google Meet, Google Hangouts, Skype,
JoinMe, and Zoom, and many others. Through any of
these sites, distance is gapped among individuals
and communication and interaction is made
possible.
